what about a road movie.... and not enough ninjas. ninjas should be EVERYWHERE. sitting in the cafe while you have a romantic confession scene. having a brooding shower scene together with the main hero. sitting at the board meeting next to the CEO. tying your loose shoelaces. photobombing the product placement...hunting a vampire in the middle of chaebol mothers´ catfight....

redfox,

I nearly fell out of my chair! I need a seatbelt.

ninja straphangers on the subway. packs of ninjas cycling along the Han at night. gyrating at a noraebang. pairs of female ninjas driving convertibles a la THELMA AND LOUISE. tending their vegetable gardens. ninja weddings. ninja sushi chefs with killer knife skills. hitchhiking. skateboarding. picknicking in the park with their little ninjas and halmoni. delivering food. working as baristas and serving -- what else? -- black coffee. working out at the gym. building sandcastles at the beach (and looking almost Victorian!). fly fishing. running daycare facilities. fixing tile rooves. working at the carwash. driving taxis. serving on juries. golfing. at the amusement park. selecting couple rings.

must.stop.now.

LOL. see, ninjas make the world a better place instantly.

Ninjas glueing posters on walls. Ninjas delivering chicken and beer. Ninjas playing cards with old people in a nursing home. Ninjas watching the opera hanging upside down from the ceiling. Ninjas being street artists. Ninjas in a cram school.

It has been a good year. Usually I don't watch a lot of currently airing/recent dramas, but I've found myself watching lots over the past few months. Even those that I felt didn't totally work have had good acting and compelling elements. Six Flying Dragons is still the one to beat for me, though.

Hi there! I manage to be earlier today!

it has been hectic, my coloring book is finally in PRINTING! My uncle has a print shop, I am a lucky little fox...

postcards will take some time, but I think they are on the way. designing for print is more complicated that it looks at first glance.

also, I don´t know if it is normal (I suppose it is) but my neighborhood is like... the local Hollywood at the moment. I go to get milk from the corner shop and meet 6 local celebrities on the way - musicians, poets, designers, writers! My poor little heart nearly jumped to the groud yesterday when 3 of my favorite musicians walked right past me, and I know they are just people, and raising their kids and also in need of tooth paste and toilet paper, but I am not sure if I can take it. I am bound to go gaga at some point and act real silly. maybe I already did. how do I act normal when my idols are standing in line with me in the supermarket? my nerves...

Dramas:
Siwons´ cameo in Dramaworld oh lol
Also watching Dear My Friends, it really touches me, because I have been thinking a lot about people getting old yet still wanting to take the most out of their lives and still count, you know. but that´s so rare, most old ladies here just sit at home or in the yard and daydream the life away. or they don´t even dream, they just seize to live even when alive. it is really sad. I wish they all lived a little.

Question: best representation of the life of old people in dramas?

watched the first episodes of several dramas too, but none managed to grab me. Lucky Romance is a little boring and annoying at once.
the only good one is Mirror of the Witch. a bit of mystery always works, even when the main girl seems slightly stiff / uncomfortable in her acting. too much exorcist deja vu though.

Congratulations on your coloring book! Is it an adult coloring book or a kid's coloring book? Will be fun to see it when you upload pics online. Or are you only selling it locally?

Should I watch Dramaland? Speaking as a little old lady, I can only say that sometimes health keeps a person indoors. And general loneliness, friends dying off and all.

I tried Lucky Romance. Wasn't feeling it either. Even with my sweetie LSH

Congrats redfox!

It's so funny this batch...I was really really looking forward for Lucky Romance, and I couldn't even finish the first episode. Yet the others that I didn't even know were coming, I love them! Like Dear My friends...when ever I talk to my mom I enjoy listening about her friends who are like my "imo" because I grew up with them too. I've stayed many nights at their houses and grew up with their kids, I go and visit their houses when I go back to my parents' place. All the feelings in that drama flush over me, cause I feel them too. That feeling of wanting to pause time so I can hug my mom a bit longer. Or watch their faces as they sleep. All of them.

I also enjoy Oh Hae Young, and laugh out loud with Beautiful Gong Shim. All of these are surprising to me, cause I didn't expect to enjoy them as much as I do.

well, I envy you. I want to be cool, but yesterday I am afraid I nearly got hit by a tram cause I was so taken by surprise.

on the other hand, it is only my reaction to musicians. I don´t even know most actors, they make too few movies here and I don´t go to the theater much, and I don´t have a TV to watch local shows. so I don´t know them. But bands! it just makes me so happy, cause the emotion I get from concerts is incomparable.

0

Maybe the problem is because I've never been to a concert.

Peeps -

Yeah, I don't get overly excited or whatever if I happen to see a celebrity in a shop, for example. I don't know if it's because it happens around here quite often that I don't think it's no big deal beyond it being an interesting situation. ........ I guess I could never be a sasaeng fan!

Hi Redfox,
Congrats on the coloring book. It's good to get in on the craze when you can.

As for "old people," from what I have seen, they are fairly realistically portrayed in the KDramas. There does seem to be a high percentage of Stage 4 cancer in the older folks. Maybe that's common in Korea because they had such a hard time when they were young. It would be good to see older people getting new hips and knees and being able to get out more.

I loved Flower Grandpa Investigation Team because the guys were so spunky and funny.

yeah. this part of town has cute wooden houses, although I like them more when they are breaking down wabi-sabi like. the renovated, sterile, smooth surfaces are not very interesting to draw, there are no structures that would add character. But I do understand... people want a warm room goddammit. not wind blowing through. at least I have taken a lot of pictures from every angle, morning and evening light, so I can preserve the old image before it all gets covered up and painted.

I'm also wondering if Dol Bok every becomes less angry... such a ball of (negative) energy. Though with his father killed, I'm not surprised.

Spent this week getting hooked onto OSTs! The Oh Haeyoung Again one and the Five Children's OST are really great.

Speaking of Five Children, after every episode I'm always thinking "I can't wait for the next one!" I really want a drama hangout ; A ;

Lucky Romance was hilarious. I'm so glad, because the previous batch of dramas weren't to my taste, but now there are so many I like! :-) More of Ryu Joon Yeol!!! And also the second lead (I forgot his name but Gwi!!) actually speaks more in this drama. All the better for me to squeal over his voice.

Back to 1989 is getting angsty, but I'm going to finish it!!! I hopre there's a happy ending.

Also wondering if there are beanies who watch We Got Married?

I really really love Byun Yo Han and his TWDR version - well, let's just say that's not how I saw MY LBJ maturing lol. TWDR has blown my mind, you must watch it all. At this point I can't say which is stronger for me but am tempted to give the edge to TWDR because they've done so much with half the episodes. It's A-flaming-MAZING. And the Heads No 2 recaps and all the comments are equally A-flaming-MAZING.

happy weekend and Mansae to Weekend drama
-Five Enough- this drama provoke my feeling about marriage, is it really needed between 2 people that financially secure and already has established a family foundation to get married?
It is preferred but it's not an easy thing with all the family relation, the past marriage conflict, the kids problem, they are good as they are right now, just move out from in-law house please.
It's really a heavy decision IMO. Still, the Golf couple is my favorite. They are really fun.
-Happy Home- it's quite a happy week with seo ji gon and hae ryung relationship after 13 years, consist 8 years of happiness (just called it that) and 5 years of hell that got worse each day, she finally able to enjoy a life.
Her marriage with Hyun Ki is already over when he decide to not telling about his surgery and years of falls hope that destroy her wall over and over again.
I really like the main story of this drama but that's all, I like the little sis/bro relationship but the happy home problem is just need to handle business style.
Despite being only charmed by the main story, it has so much weight in me since hyun ki obviously still in love with her.
This all marriage life can actually be avoided if they don't give up on each other but tbh it's really hard decision.
Hae Ryung need too much time to move on that is over Hyun Ki limit and he shut her hopes then not telling her, letting the guilt consume both of them.
and again Lee Seung Woo is the man of weekend drama ,
just asking, I remember Hae ryung knows that Seo ji gon is the doctor at her son's operation right???
-Gong Shim-..Eom-pa (Eomma+Appa) by Junsu ala Gong Shim imagination just owned me.
so is it equal to Mad? Modad? Dam? lol
Dahn Tae is a weird guy, he just weirdly amusing.
Junsu being the nice guy which is good but I hope he doesn't get scary later, it seems like the nicest guy perhaps the scariest guy in general.
Gong Shim being the quirk that understands her weakness and accepts herself is so endearing.
and lastly, gong mi which to me is an opportunist and seems like the type who can't see others happy.
it's like she knew GS has her own persona but she just doesn't care and she put herself above GS bc she thinks she's above GS.
The merit of GS is she knew she has strength as a person and embraces the fact that she is not as beautiful or as smart as her sister.
People isn't born the same but she works hard for what she can do despite being beaten by the parent-overly-obvious favors to Gong Mi.
It's not wrong to be born not stunningly beautiful and to acknowledging that IMO.
I actually find super pretty people that find themselves average is cliche drama trope, people are aware of themselves.

and another question to DB-ers.
I saw the massive comment from CITT and OHY, did anybody used software to track your reply/comment?

Hi Sancheezy!
Thanks for recommending beautiful gong shim! I LOVE IT!
Anyway i was going to say I think Gong Mi is also deeply insecure despite the fact she is the "more beautiful one". She can't be happy for gong shim because she keeps chasing after things that other people have and its because she doesn't feel she is good enough yet. I think so at least. And yes she is an opportunist and also manipulative. I hope they don't write her to be a complete b*tch because she is gong shim's sister and I'd much prefer her to be a more layered character than just the "evil sister".

I think gong mi needs to have a session with Dan Tae and he will laugh at her while saying what's wrong with her.
She is always in the upper hand and I agree with you that it never feel enough for her.

I think she wants to be on par with the chaebol and runs towards that goal,
but it's only 4 episode, hope the show gets better each episode.

Among couples in Five Children, I like the golf couple the best as well. They are cute together.

I actually like Happy Home (probably more than Five Children plot wise). I am curious if the young assistant for Min Soo likes her or he is her lost brother or something. Min soo's husband is helpless. I think that he will probably become a better person as the drama progress but in reality someone like him does not learn any lessons from his mistakes. I am glad that Min soo got rid of him finally. I understand his father's decision( because he loves his son and he felt obliged to protect him somehow) but what her husband and her father in law did to Min Soo was cruel. I was so cross that I hope Min Soo will beat their business. I feel the pain that their mother feel. Poor woman,,,.

Required fields are marked *

I also like happy home better than five children plot wise, overall FC is more balance and not so tragic , they all happy and we can see how it solved but HH is just gripping with the conflict that I sympathize more, and all the in-law that really need to read their in-law manual again. Especially if you are Ex in-Law

Then min soo should just open her own business and go away from that family,
that's really too much, she is a nice capable woman and they want too much from her. Her husband needs to get kimchi slap double session, he has to understand her position, esp about the visit hospital routine, why?
Even the kids show how they can't calm down after knowing the baby's origin despite knowing the baby doesn't do anything, it hurts,

and the subs still not picking up, I am really glad that there's sub out there, I hope the subber get the best health

Happy Friday Beanies!

I procrastinated the whole week before finally watching a new drama yesterday. Not sure if it's because recently all the dramas have been recommended by you lovely Beanies here so they have all been great, and somehow I end up dragging my feet before I attempt starting a new one. Maybe it's the fear of being disappointed? Esp when the good dramas make me so happy. It's like I don't want to burst the happy bubble. Am I the only one?

But anyway! Thanks to Sancheezy for giving me the description last week- I started Beautiful Gong Shim! And I LOVE IT!!
Decided to go for it because it's easier to catch up with 4 epi than Oh Hae Young's 8. (I'm pragmatic that way) ?

*Spoilers*

Love the interactions between Gong Shim and what I like to call, her 2 men! Haha. Why is she the unlucky sister? I'd much rather spend time with those 2 cuties than those old smelly pretentious lawyers. Hehe.
I like that Gong Shim is a bit quirky but despite how unlucky she has been in life, she still has a backbone and can and will stand up for herself- I loved the part where she called the smelly old man in the interview a Dog! And more than once!

Have not seen anything else Nam Goong Min has been in, but it's nice to have a leading man who acts practically like an uncouth gangster, rather than the usual successful unfeeling cold kind. But yeah I guess cliches have to be there so he has the heart of gold (which I don't mind) and the birth secret (which I don't like at all but well.) it doesn't hurt that he is Very Good Looking. Why I have never noticed him before this??

And! Loving the bromance. But I can practically FEEEL the ANGST coming because of the birth secret.

For some reason Gong Shim reminds me of Yang Guo (character played by Ella Chen) in Down with Love (Taiwan drama). Quirky and downtrodden but oh so loveable. Not really sure why? I Loved Ella in that show though. And I feel that Minah is playing Gong Shim with the same kind of heart and gusto.

Don't like what they are doing to Dong Mi though, because now she is just backstabbing Dong Shim, which is not nice. But will wait and see how that pans out. Right now I'm thinking she is partially a plot device to bring the OTP closer (no complaints from me about that!) but not sure how her storyline is going to be.

Marathoned the 4 episodes and now am WAITING for more. (I now regret choosing a show only 4 episodes in. Darn it!!) Pls pls don't disappoint me Show! Sending love to other Beautiful Gong Shim watchers! ❤️

it's nice that you like it, ^_-
tbh I just search the synopsis that day, I went to watch it with a blank plate, only knew the actor/actresses without having any idea about the plot.

if my memory serves me right, Yang Guo is adorable, she has a harsh voice, she talks like a man but that's Yang Guo by definition.
talking about Down With Love, my fave character still the sister, Yang Duo, she is really funny and untouchable, quite unfortunate for GS to not having a sister as awesome as Yang Duo,
someone that really good at her job, has so much affinity with Yu Ping/Jerry Yan and every guy that at one time, I even want her and Yu Ping to happen,
she can get emotional but not for long,

I think both yang guo and gong shim seems really genuine person, they understand they are not as attractive as others but that's life, there always people that better than them so they just move on... maybe it will play more when GS realize how gong mi try to be close with junsu and stealing her chance silently.

if this is Tw-drama, it feel like GS will end up with junsu, IDK if it just me but TW has this "I only see her and like her even when I got attracted by other girl 1st, that actually when I realize she is the one" and they really like to have theme of broken up with model/popular girl.
Everyone seems to get the wrong couple 1st bc the opportunity and late realisation.

Haven't watched many Taiwan dramas lately because somehow the acting I feel isn't up to standard. I always feel some form of disconnect towards one of the main leads. The only reason I got through Down with Love was because Jerry Yan is darn good looking, because his acting isn't very good. (Sadly I'm shallow that way ;))
Feel like the Korean actors are much better in the acting aspect (at least the few dramas I've seen), which helps me get over other problems like a bad storyline.
Guess it's a good thing then that it's not so predictable cuz I'm rooting for gong shim to end up with Dan Tae. Jinsu is too nice... I prefer my men with some sass. Lol

Agree with the acting part, some mainland drama also suffers from that,
I like DtL because of the sister, I like her a lot, and I have this good feeling seeing 2nd lead don't get the acceptance in DtL,
Kdrama definitely has better acting on the average, it gets me over iljimae despite the confusing story line,

I am okay with GS go both way but this KDrama so it's more towards Dan Tae,
junsu is too nice, I remember how he reassured his mom about not falling for gong shim,
if she just sae his expression, he didn't mean it at all but he knew that's what the mom wants to hear, poor drama to let her only hear that but not saw that,

my assumption is based on the older tw-drama too T.T

Hey guys!

I'm a bit behind on my drama watching because I was in DC for a week for my brother's graduation and sight-seeing. I had a blast but missed my dramas!

The one I'm all caught up with is Oh Hae-young Again and I really love it. I can't wait to see where the story is headed. Such great characters and a stellar performance from Seo Hyun-jin.

I've seen two episodes of Mirror of the Witch and am enjoying it. As a fantasy fan it's really nothing I haven't seen before but it's still a nice, classic fantasy story nonetheless.

I haven't checked out Dear My Friends, Beautiful Gong Shim, or Lucky Romance yet but I hope to soon!

In terms of older dramas, I'm still watching both Sassy Go Go and I Remember You. I'm almost done with IRY and don't want it to end! Only two episodes left... sad...

So happy that everyone is enjoying OHA and praising Seo Hyun-jin. But I believe Eric is doing a decent job too. He's portraying a character opposite to his other roles (e.g. play boy in Que sera sera, spoiled chaebol in Phoenix, naughty character in Spy M and Discovery of love). Here his playing a very quite, perfectionist geeky character who seems cold outside but is very warm/caring inside. It's very difficult to notice such a character who is very quite while his lead heroin is a spunky talkative girl. But his eyes, his facial and mimic, and even his physical moves are all perfect, that you can feel his guilt and his love and why he's suffering. I think here he's even better than many trained actors considering his background as an idol. He is so good that every co-stars of him can shine, even in a bad production drama like Spy M, HYS seems good to me.

P.S. with the hair down he looks very gloomy, I wish they change his hairstyle at the second half of the drama.

I do agree, people criticize him because of his idol background!! But for me not only he is one of the most handsome K-actor (as compared to prototype super fair k-actor/actress), but also a very talented and versatile actor who can make any character so intense and/or poignant. All his characters (even his 2nd lead role in Phoenix) have still staid in my mind and I can't find any other example.

he's really so good! i know people were wtf-ing at his behaviour in episode 8 but i was THRILLED because intense eric is my favourite eric, he's just SO GOOD at it. i was thinking his character was going to continue to be more restrained in this drama but he's the kind of actor where i can literally never get sick of him doing intense fucked up lovestruck. from the safety of a fictional drama of course.

0

Although I always liked Eric's handsomeness (the not-boyish style is my soft spot), I never thought he could be that good of an actor.

I can't see the slightest hint of a former/current idol in this role. Sure, the director does an excellent job with the show but Eric is a true asset. He pours out his heart over a performance that elevates him on another level in terms of acting.

Que Sera, Sera made me hate his character with passion while Oh Hae-young Again! makes me his avid fan for the first time. I also don't mind his hair style. They probably try to keep it simple and less tidy in order to match his on-screen personality.

@bahrez,

This is my first time seeing Eric, and I'm impressed. He's doing a terrific job with non-verbal expressiveness, quiet intensity, and deft nuance. His laugh is lovely, but we've only heard it a couple of times. He comes across as believable, and effectively portrays a guy who is severely conflicted.

I'm watching mainly because of SHJ -- but think the whole cast is solid. Writer-nim has pulled some fast ones when it comes to plot twists and fake-outs.

Looking forward to Mondays, too.

I just marathoned discovery for the 3rd time while waiting for OHA. I love that DOL is very different with most of kdrama, it is very realistic. And Eric is excellent and his chemistry with JYM is superb.

0

I agree! Discovery of Love was good, in fact I think all the 4 members of the main cast were good.

0

@Bahrez, i did exactly the same thing haha. DoR is one of my fave, but seems like not too many ppl like it. Which is too bad.
And really appreciate Eric's acting chop afterward since i can see 2 different person in DoR and OHYA.

0

Hi, starnger...

Thanks for mentioning DISCOVERY OF LOVE. I'm enjoying Eric's acting enough to check out his earlier work. ;-)

I was the same with I Remember You. Those brothers were too adorable, I couldn´t really let go of them.

with Mirror of the Witch, lots of deja vu with many movies and books and series, but I get the impression people making this drama truly believe in their story and that´s what gives it a certain attractiveness

Hi all:

How goes? I had one of the best viewing weeks ever. First, I saw a really sweet J-movie called Forget-Me-Not (2015.) One of these sweet odd slice-of-weird-life movies the Japanese do so well. I highly recommend it. It's poignant, haunting, and so gently and unobtrusively done. It'll stay with me forever. But that's me.

I also saw Le JeHoon on Happy Together's Dominators episode. I looooooooooooooove him! He is so adorable, and so sweet. What a dear person! Ah, if I were younger, I'd fly over to Korea and seduce him and make him all all all mine. His counterpart, I think, was Han Heejun who was in the "People who have been through a lot" Happy Together episode. Oh my! Oh dear! I felt a bit sorry for him. Could be me but he seemed lost between cultures and eager to please and really not knowing how to impress others or just plain hang out and have fun. Again, could be me because I also came to America as a kid and so was always culturally-confused. When I saw Heejun on American Idol, I felt his sense of dislocation. And now that he's back in Korea, his unfitting-in-ness is even more skewed. Watching him was kinda cringe-inducing. Jaesook was so sweet, though.

Dramas:

Reading recaps for Oh Hae Young, Beautiful Gong Shim, and Lucky Romance because the tropes are all too familiar so I'm only vaguely interested.

Right now, I seem to be wanting only stories whose plotlines are utterly new to me. Stories taking place on roads not yet or not usually travelled. Just wanting newness and originality. So I'm pretty much watching only the following:

Mirror of the Witch: This drama started good and just keeps getting better. A real yarn/legend feel to it, and plot is primary in the simplest most perfect sense of "story."

Dear My Friends: Oh I am so loving this!

Flower in Prison: Also loving this. Am ready for the long haul. This season I didn't do any loooooooooooooong family weekend dramas, and this hits the spot.

That's it. Happy Weekend, all.

But I'm anticipating Yeon Hee's survival and keeping my fingers crossed that Ok Nyeo gets out soon and flies under the radar of Lord Yoon. Kind of like how Moo Myeong is doing so right now in Master: God of Noodles. Ahhhh. So many dramas airing right now are hitting the spot for me :).

Eh, I agree with just reading recaps for Lucky Romance. I wasn't wowed by the first episode.

Carole, I am the same, I keep searching something totally new, that´s why I am also daydreaming my own plots all the time. just now I was thinking, because of the influence of DMF, what if there were two people, one young, one old, who were both told they are dying, and the young one takes it surprisingly maturely but the old one just gives up. and then they go on a road trip together, not knowing if one of them might not return from it. and the young person teaches the old one how to enjoy life at long last. the point would be that having already lived a long life doesnt make you less scared of death just like it doesnt mean you know what is important in life, and being young doesnt mean you couldnt come to terms with difficult things or knowing how to take the most out of every day.

That sounds like a perfect story. Old folks generally get so bogged down with regret and self-forgiveness and woulda-shoulda-coulda. And the idea of dying and not having a chance to repair everything! It'd be a totally connectable story. (Am not saying this cause I'm an old folk.) So ....Go for it. And because you're an illustrator, you could draw the story! Hey, you could even do your own webtoon!!!!! We'd definitely subscribe.

Yes, I want something new, something I haven't quite seen yet. Or haven't quite seen in a long while. Not liking the idea of kdrama writers putting so-called "new" spins on tired old tropes.

well, I am not really an illustrator, I am a textile artist and I draw occasionally, but not that well, I am afraid. but...if I dont have to draw that well..

yeah talk about new spins they are now taking really old stuff.... american moviemaking saw its downfall in remakes, why do drama PDs think they get luckier? it is a death trap, I say, and it kills off new talent with their own creative ideas. maybe that is why they do it, actually

I can draw some very decent chibis however. I could make a web toon in chibi form with speech bubbles.

Hey guys!

So I have been dying to talk about Goddess of Fire! I am relatively new to k dramas so I have been playing catch up on dramas with actors I like.

I hate Goddess of Fire. While I LOVE me some Lee Sang Yoon, I want to punch his character in his face. And if Jung Yi says she is thankful to him one more time... She thanks him for freaking everything!!!! I am so annoyed at this point. The Prince who had barely done a thing gets ALL of the thanks and the loyal and very handsome Tae Do who has been there for you, protecting you... You turn him down. I. Don't. Get. It.

I have made it to episode 17 but at this point, I have decided to abandon this drama. Tae Do has been the only shining star in this dark night but even he can't save it anymore. He is literally the ONLY character I don't want to punch in the face. (This is clearly no fault of the actors. They are doing their best with a crappy script.)

I am developing quite a love for saeguks so if you guys have some recommendations that would be great! I have already seen Six Flying Dragons. I fell in love with it and Yoo Ah In!!

Hmmm..if it's fusion sagueks may be SKK scandal (if you haven't already watched it-that is )?The start was good the middle still Ok, got a bit draggy towards the end , but still cute enough to like it. Plus it had both Song Joon Ki and Yoo Ah-In. Oh the bromance!

Princess' Man,Queen Inhyun's man (time travel stuff back to Joseon era-so not exactly sagueky) are two very good shows to watch

I enjoyed The painter of winds a lot too and then there is also Bridal Mask (Gaksitaaaaaaal *sorry got a bit emotional here*) and also some time travel+joseon stuff like Moon embraces the sun, rooftop prince (funny,eyecandy-especially Moon embracing the sun-, but not very substantial)

All of them are around 20ish episodes and are not exactly SFD calibre, though each has its own merits.

But if you are looking for something that is mind blowingly good with gorgeous gorgeous visuals, tight plot, excellent acting try giving Nirvana In Fire a go.It's a chinese series and has 50+ episodes, but one of the best!

Nirvana in Fire I haven't heard much about but I will definitely look into it, especially if the acting is good and if it has a great story!

0

NIRVANA IN FIRE is mind blowingly good. Just get past the first 10 episodes or so, it gets better when the plot picks up.

You may also want to check out The Return of Iljimae. It was great!

I also dropped Jung Yi years ago simply bc I forget about it, it passed by.

for Saeguk,
I think of
- Tree with Deep Roots (6FD continuation)
- Three Musketeers (I think this has 13 ep)
- Queen Seon Deok (just bit info, it originally has 50 ep but extended to be 62 so the 12 add episode is not really tied to the main stories but rather the complete version to end the love stories, people who love the real complete feel it draggy but if you adore the romance, you'll like the extended episode, for me I like it even it hurts)
- Dong Yi (about the maid than turn into concubine, include detective part and the cute love story)
- Hong Gil Dong (funny and hilarious)
- The Princess's Man (the romeo and juliet in saeguk world, it end up happy though)

On Queen Seon-deok, I'm one of the ones who didn't appreciate the extension because I didn't give a damn about the romance. The best part of the drama is the power struggle between Deok-man and Mishil. Everything else to me was extra really. I didn't even care about Bidam (I thought all the male characters were goddamn boring, and KNG wasn't as charismatic as what people claim him to be) even though almost everyone was in love with him.

Required fields are marked *

I think the extension for 12 ep is too much, just add 3 episode in you need more closure, bidam shines more with Mishil,
but since I also like the romance, it hurts, I hope I can just dislike it or they just do the extension since it's a rushed decision IMO

then years later I watch Bad Guy with Kim Nam Gil too, I got double pain,
hah I wished I don't care,

I'm among the few who kinda enjoyed The Moon that Embraces the Sun, despite its simplicity. You can read on DB and elsewhere about its flaws and such, but when I watched it, I was in the mood for something easy and pretty, and that's what it gave. Well...it tried to be dark, and while watching it I thought it was reasonably hook-some, but later when I read the criticisms of it, I also tended to agree.

But, every so often, I feel the urge to watch bits of it again. Cos, yeah, it's moody, it's shot so beautifully, it's romantic, and it features a hot young king in the form of Kim Soo Hyun.

Or...maybe I'm just a sucker for hot-blooded young kings, cos despite all the criticism Jang Ok-Jung Live in Love got, I also kinda enjoyed it. Oh and cos it features my favorite Yoo Ah In, too.

Hi, JessA...

THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG -- Seo Hyun-Jin in the title role with an excellent ensemble cast. It's my Kdrama touchstone. 108 episodes, but less than half an hour. I've been singing its praises for the past couple or three OTs.

Other sageuk faves include CHUNO, PAINTER OF THE WIND, LAND OF THE WIND, SONG OF THE PRINCE / SEODONGYO, GU AM HEO JOON, SPLISH SPLASH LOVE, DEVIL RIDER, HYANGDAN (2 episode twist on the story of Chunhyang -- which is a great film if you're interested in pansori, BTW). Enjoyed both versions of ILJIMAE. FAITH has its flaws, but for me the OST is cracktastic, and I really enjoyed the performances by Ryu Deok Hwan as King GongMin, Kim Mi-Kyung as Court lady Choi, and Kwon Min as eunuch An Do-Chi [the latter two currently in OH HAE YOUNG along with Lee Han-Wi]. Plus QUEEN IN-HYUN'S MAN.

Currently about half-way through SPLENDID POLITICS, but got distracted with live watching OH HAE YOUNG AGAIN. Gotta get back to Cha Seung-Won...

Films:
DUELIST, THE KING AND THE CLOWN, WAR OF THE ARROWS (with dialogue in Manchurian!), RAGING CURRENTS and the thematically-related HEAVEN'S SOLDIERS, Korean War era WELCOME TO DONGMAKGOL, and WOOCHI for time-traveling Joseon mayhem.

Random question for javabeans, girlfriday or anyone else who has a 'recap' blog, because I know someone here will know.

This, as well as many other blogs that post recaps for dramas use screenshots in the posts. Are there any legal repercussions that come from doing this? I’m new to blogging myself and since I wasn’t sure if it’s ok to simply post the screenshot(s) in the recap or if there is something that must be done before this, I wanted to ask the experts.

I know that one of the four factors of fair use says ‘reproduction for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship or research is not copyright infringement.’ So, does this apply to blogs that simply recap dramas? Call me paranoid, but I just didn’t want to do anything wrong. Not that I'm implying any of you would, I'm just a little confused and would like some clarification.

Thanks so much for any info on this subject!

I have a recap blog but I don't know anything about that. If I'm infringing on any thing, I'll be here waiting for them.

And then I guess the whole world will see my stick drawings in my recaps.

Seeing that even news sites use those pictures, (and if they come out within 10 minutes of a show's start, I don't imagine that they're actively asking for permission), I don't think the world will be seeing my action-sticks any time soon.

@Peeps, ha ha! Maybe you should try a stick figure drawing as a feature (like Kolorful Palette?). That'd be funny :P

Yeah, it would seem kind of ridiculous if what everyone used was, you know, illegal for free use, but I've been reading so much about copyright lately, I wanted some sort of soothing, calm voice telling me it would all be ok.

(I wouldn't mind seeing your stick figures though. In fact, it could be a new trend, just to re-imagine the scenes in your favorite dramas by having stick people in them. I know I'd check that out.)

for fair used in online media,
Taking screenshots for an article, for example, generally is tolerated as fair use. One could argue that the purpose is educational, the resulting product is informative (rather than creative), only minor snippets are used, and the original creator’s income tends to be increased as a result.

I think youtube also has like 5-15 video that can be used without getting claim bc it just the snippet

I remember preparing this for a class

DB actually went through a mini-panic while Level 7 Civil Servant was airing and they were notified by a rep of DramaFever that they had to take down their screencaps for that drama. Here is the official post:

http://www.dramabeans.com/2013/03/announcement-level-7-civil-servant-recaps-now-with-less-joo-won/

And the follow up:

http://www.dramabeans.com/2013/03/update-screencaps-recaps-and-joo-won/

This actually resulted in some HILARIOUS illustrations by JB and the fans to replace the screencaps (as well as funny and sometimes random pictures or screencaps from other shows the actors have been in) even though DramaFever said later the same day that they did not ask their rep to send the notice and they apologized for the issue.

Check out the later recaps for the show, they are a riot.

http://www.dramabeans.com/2013/03/level-7-civil-servant-episode-14/

Other than this instance, I don't think DB has ever had a problem with their screencaps. JB says that Korea is pretty chill when it comes to using screencaps and sometimes even encourage it.

Master God of Noodle - Watching in bits and pieces due to time issues, but watching enough to still kind of know what's going on.  For this reason, reading Peeps's recaps have been great!  Thanks Peeps!!

Entertainer - I hadn't noticed before, but Kang Min-hyuk has grown into a good-looking young man.  I'm liking him in his role as Ha-neul.

Marriage Contract - Oh my goodness, so good.

Mr. Selfridge - And just like that, everything lost in the span of 10 minutes.  How terribly sad.

Luther - Finished the second season and just started the third! It's intense, but apparently I can't look away!

That's all for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

Ice cream sounds good right about now. :)

Luther is a British series about a modern-day London detective, John Luther, who deals with very serious crimes. He's a very good detective but his job consumes him, you could say. With the types of criminals he deals with and the nonstop aspect of his job ...... it makes for one intense show.

I don't know what else to say without starting to spoil details. If you can stand emotionally tortured characters and creepy, depraved criminals then this is the show for you because it certainly has that, along with some twists and turns.

It's comprised of 4 seasons. I honestly don't know if there are any more planned or if 4 was it.

Check it out if you have a chance and see what you think about it.

Happy friday guys!

How are you all? We finally have som sun and warmth here! 15 degrees Celsius means t-shirts and lots of time outside at work.

No new toddler stories as of late, because I've mostly been with the 1 year olds. Who, besides having "turf wars" over one specific car (and randomly steeling each others bottles and sometimes food), doesn't really lead to a lot of drama cliche-stories :P

Dramaland:
-Finally got around to watch Descended from the sun. Why hello there Song joong Ki in uniform. Think this is the first time watching him I've really though of him as more than a cute boy (which is irronic as he is older than me..). I never did watch nice guy mind, so maybe that's why.

Anyway, I get what people meant now. It's really beautiful to watch, and I enjoyed most of the characters. But really, the recovery after every injury happens so fast that towards the end any emotional angst is just gone. Because you just never expect another outcome. And that saps all the tension right out of there..

-REwatching the Thai version of Full House and enoying it as much as I did the first time.

-Have yet to start any of the new batch of dramas. Feel like I'm in a prolonged slump, where I just want to rewatch things I enjoyed instead of trying out something new with potential bad endings.

Aside from the weirdness of it, the evil second lead was "rewarded" with the guy, as if she was the only girl in the universe. I so hate that aspect of kdramas. I'm always hoping for some third girl to pop in around the second to last episode to just sweep away the "leftover" second-lead guy.

"To know someone, walk a mile in their shoes."

I bow down to the almighty dictators of this site. Recapping just one drama (Master - God of Noodles, up to Ep 10) is enough for me to understand how tiring it is to recap dramas.

Manse to all recappers here!

I wonder when the new minions will get their welcome. I mean, it's been quite sometime but they haven't actually been officially introduced, like a front page for them or even just a note somewhere. Their names just pop up right next to their recaps and... I admit I usually miss those. I don't remember the original minions being treated like that. Or is it because they're still on probation?

Even though it's only been like 3 or 4 weeks with a week off in between, I think I've had enough experience to know that running a website ain't no easy task. Lol, can you believe that this week was my first time with Twitter? I don't get it. (I've been anti social media).

Dramas I'm watching:

Again, Oh HaeYoung!: I love it! Love love love love love it. I think mainly because I love our HaeYoung and her family. DoKyung's a doofus around her too. I love Isadora and JinSang is such a terrible guy (in a good way, except when he sucks) that I want them to be together, because Isadora rocks and because, for entertainment.

Master - God of Noodles: Duh, of course I'm watching. How else do I recap this otherwise? I'll say that I was mighty upset with the show from around episode 6 to 9 but episode 10 cured it all.

Lucky Romance: I came for the shenanigans. It ain't the shenanigans I was expecting. But I shall stay for now. WHY would they change him from a scrooge to an actual tech genius?! WHY did they have to lower her age when Hwang JungEum was perfect at the original age of 32 but now looks way too old for 26? Like, WHY?! I mean, it could have been so much fun with a noona romance given that she prowling all over him (I mean, this is DIFFERENT compared to other Noona romances, Okay?) but now it just seems like a crazy youngster clinging onto an older guy. I think I'd rather watch a crazy "ahjumma" chase her young prey. I'm so upset that I can't read much more of the comic.
Even if I have to check a dictionary for every word, I WILL READ IT! LET ME READ IT! (Pay money then, you penniless fool. T_T)

Five Children: Love this show to bits because of SangMin, YeonTae and MiJung (and maybe her sassy grandma). The end.

Varieties:

1Night2Days: Continues to be fun, but I felt the drag in the last episode. Also, still recapping.

Superman Returns: I need time for this! I can't believe my website stole time from this!

Started watching some dramas after Ms. Temper so here it goes...

Juhan Shuttai: I like this. It's been pretty solid so far. Easy to watch and is light and serious at the same time. Checked it out for Joe Odagiri but the female lead grew on me.

Beautiful Gong-shim: I think the script is a little messy. The plot isn't very appealing too. I'm not sure what message it wants to put across as well. The show is probably just meant to be a fun one, but I'm sort of over dramas like these already.

Heaven's Promise: My first daily drama. The plot moves so slowly though. I just kept ffd-ing the episodes. I think I finished each at an average time of about 5 minutes (I skipped quite a lot of them). Finally, I decided that daily dramas are not for me.

Les Interprètes: Objectively speaking, the drama is bad. The flow is pretty crap, and the dialogue is even worse. However, Huang Xuan and Yang Mi look so pretty together that I'm just going to watch for the romantic developments. And perhaps also to check how much my French has deteriorated after all these years.

Looking forward to...

Presumed Accidents: It's been quite a while since my last HK drama. The premise sounds really interesting, and HK has always been pretty good with procedural dramas (like the Forensic Heroes series). The biggest minus is the female lead. She was awful in everything I've seen her in.

<<Les Interprètes

It's utterly terrible. It's so fake. Life doesn't happen that way. People don't speak the way the characters in this drama do (or if they do, they're probably on a reality show on TV, highly conscious of being filmed). The acting isn't particularly good either. I skip-watched the first episode and a half and then I had to bail.

I just... can't.

But I don't generally watch C-dramas, or even TW-dramas (just dropped Love at Seventeen as well, which had a fairly promising high school portion and then turned into much-of-the-same-as-ever-with-insanely-annoying-characters).

I get it though. I think I'm just more lax when it comes to Cdramas. I managed to get through almost half of Cruel Romance and The Lady and the Liar (both terrible dramas) before I decided to stop. I think I'll definitely drop Les Interprètes sometime in the future too.

Also, I think TW dramas are in a real slump. Bad plots and execution, and seriously unknown actors (this isn't bad per se but TW actors are generally weak with their lines and it's painfully obvious for newer actors plus a lot of them lack charisma). In general, they just haven't progressed. They are still using the same old formula.

0

I can't agree with lot of TW-recent dramas logic, I prefer the old one,

all C-drama that charmed me is the historical one, I don't think the modern one has many good things except some like Ode to Joy or Amazing Boyfriend (It has stories), love me if you dare , boss and me also above average
I even hyped for Tribes and Empire later this year, I hope it's gonna be good
I'm more intrigued by period drama than the modern one.

0

Alua:

Nnoo, not love at seventeen. I've only gotten around to see the first episode which I enjoyed and had hopes for this one.

Sancheezy:
I agree with you. Most of the chinese dramas I've watched and really really liked are the historical ones. The modern ones fall flat for me a lot. (In a good way and in time with you being exceptions). I have enjoyed the episodes I've seen of Amazing boyfriend as well though

0

@Manin

I had hopes for Love at Seventeen too, because it seemed like normal people & friendship focused, but unfortunately high school ends with a really far-fetched scenario and the adult portion is full of too many overly dramatic twists and adults that are more childish than immature teenagers.

My guess is that the drama will redeem everyone and that they'll be besties again by the end, but personally I don't think the heroine should make up with her totally shitty high school 'friends', particularly not the swimming girl (who is a just a very shallow diva that thinks the world should revolve around her) but also not the other girl (who is a puppet that follows others rather than using her brain!).

They should have kept the story simple and have less events but explored them more thoroughly. Things are happening too quickly and as a result they have to put in more twists and turns, which makes everything a whole lot less compelling. Sadly, it's not another "In a Good Way" (which was what I was hoping for).

Happy Friday! Yay for long weekend!(Shame on me, I should be solemn for the occasion)
On dramaland, I am happy with current offerings- One I enjoy thesedays is 'Entertainer'. I cheer for Bromance and love everyone in Ddanddara band.

[OSEN] Reporter ambushed?? the waiting room where four member of Ddanddara band -vocal Jo Ha-neul, guitar Kyle, bass Na Yun-soo, drum Seo Jae-hoon- use (which showed in end of ep 10). Unlike in the show, the oldest Hyung Gang Min-hyuk(Jo Ha-neul) as center figure, they do makeup, study scripts and chat in this place, all showing full of energy. They were asked how they play their characters in the show.
Gang Min-hyuk(Jo Ha-neul): "Ha-neul was originally cheerful and nice person, but when he was falsely charged, he lost all and was about to give up, but he met Suk-ho hyung, and he began to get his energetic old self back, and tried to overcome difficulties- which is the point I put emphasis to portray. Since he lost his parents when he was young and got accused wrongly, how difficult his life must've been? I tried to express that to the max. Also I wanted to relay the message when there is someone who supports you, you get the energy to overcome difficulty if you open your heart to that person.
Lee Tae-sun(Na Yun-soo) debuted with this drama. As for a complete newbie, his task was to play 'Single dad' convincingly. "I play the part as father and son with Chan-hee. I think you have to actually be close and live like father and son, only that way you can convince the viewers, so I try and research in my real life. Of course it is still very difficult. I have a nephew and I play with him. But playing with kids is really hard. Just holding them up are very heavy. I thought they were light because mothers hold them up easily. Even though I hold a child up only for 3 min, I still felt like my arms were falling out."
L.Joe(Seo Jae-hoon) who is a member of group Teen Top played drum for the first time in the show. "Jae-hoon has no sense but cute, and he is different from my usual self. I don't have cute personality. I am quiet and very shy. Since JH joined the band later, I thought I have to show different quality from other three, and I think a lot about that part, playing the character at my best... About JH character, I talked a lot with writer-nim and she wrote my story similar to the way I actually have lived- The way of talking, personality, even to the part my parents were against me being a singer. Sunbae-nim gave me lots of advice. So I think I could get closer(to the character) better than I thought. Still there are times I just want to turn off TV."

Gong Myung(Kyle): "Kyle is Juliard graduate, has bluffing personality, and keeps grumbling, but also cute. At first because he was different from me, playing him was challenging and difficult. I had hard time on the personality part, but while shooting, making the scene with sunbae-nims and hyungs, I found fun things and I thought I should do sincere acting fitting to my character situation...There was Kyle's story in Ep 7 and 8. Finding a lot about Kyle, I feel I am acting immersed deeply into his character in the drama. When I read the script, I think about what Kyle would do and think, would feel, what life he leads, and act based on that. I think I am doing well because everybody make the environment so that I can portray quick-temper Kyle.

Gang Min-hyuk who plays the drum in his group CNBLUE sings in the show. "It is big deal. I sit behind drums, but when I had to stand on the stage, I was shaking and couldn't stand it, so I really disliked it. Even though it is acting, when there was situation that I had to sing and record, I trembled at first. But maybe because I was on stage many times, I got better. Of course it was not LIVE - that made me less nervous."
L.Joe who got to play drum for the first time said, "I feel I should dance on the stage, but I am playing drum here, so I was really nervous." Gang Min-hyuk said he was going to help, but LJ did really well and coming to set well prepared, so there was nothing he could say. "L.Joe asked me to watch him, but he did so well that there was nothing I could say. It came out well on the screen too, and there is reason when it comes out well like that." Lee Tae-sun also said he learned how to play bass for the first time. "I think I want to play it even after the drama ends. I think it is really nice we all get together and make something." GMH added, "He kept saying we all should play together. Since all I have to do is singing, I am ok with it."
About being the mood maker and smile virus, Gong Myung said "It is more so possible because he is fun and charming character. Kyle whines cute, and playing him is fun." GMH said, "If you don't do it right, it could be shown as annoying, but he acts so well not appearing like that at all." In the beginning of drama, GMH had scheduling conflicts doing CNBLUE activity and shooting, and it was even harder when he had to travel down to Pusan for shooting. He said "We finished the talk we'd only do CNBLUE album activity on weekend for main stations. Yong-hwa hyung and Jung-sin had drama filming too, and our agency arranged the schedule well, so I could do drama shooting and music activity without much problem.
About some view this drama as 'Healing drama', GMH said, "People around me say the show is getting more fun. Of course ratings haven't reached two digits yet, but regardless of the ratings, drama itself is fun and public responses are positive so I don't concern too much."

Gong Myung adds, "We are really enjoying shooting. I expect if we keep shooting having fun like this, maybe ratings will rise too."

About the romance-line with Geu-rin including when Ha-neul said "I get upset when you smile at other man" to Geu-rin, GMH said, "Actually you don't say that kind of words in real life, but you can do it shamelessly since it is acting. When you act only thinking about that scene and you concentrate on shooting then those expression or lines come out naturally. So there are many times I think "What is this?" I think the reason I can concentrate this well is because my partner(Hye-ri) does well resulting in good team work. There might be many reasons, but I think I could do it because there is no uncomfortableness or difficulties." He praises Ji Sung. "He really provides lots of help. He takes care of everything and whenever we act together, he gives his advice and opinion and try hard to make the scene better. Once we start shooting and concentrate, there is new synergy comes out which was not there before or we couldn't think of before, so we can act feeling at ease trusting each other. We really have good team work."
About what this drama will mean for the members, GMH said, "Drama story itself has warmth and strength. I get to watch as a viewer not just as an actor and I got teared up when Yun-soo cried and when Kyle cried. It was sad but warm, and it also gave me strength..I feel for Ha-neul - How unfair Ha-neul would have felt. Playing in the band for his dream feels nice, and like fans say "Wish he only walks on the flower path" I hope good things happen and DdanDdara band succeed. We don't play perfectly as a band, but we practice hard and share the emotion on the stage. I think it will be nice if DdanDdara band becomes successful and also we can actually play for a fan meeting."

I feel like I have been on dramabeans a lot recently because it's been so quiet at work so I have been working while reading the posts in order to keep me from falling into the pit of boredom.

Anyways,

I started 3 new dramas this week after finishing both Special Affairs Team Ten and the lakorn Hormones ( they were both great!).

I started the lakorn Wannueng Jaa Pben Superstar and although I am enjoy it, I find the pacing a bit too slow for a romcom...

I also started the japanese asadora Amachan! I love these type of slice-of-life/coming-of-age dramas like Mare. The two are really similar but I think I'll always be more bias towards Mare (I just love it to pieces). I also love how these dramas show you a whole different part of Japanese culture and tradition. They are so easy to watch and so very much endearing.

Finally I started Lucky Romance and I am enjoying it a lot so far. Ryu Junyeol is just cracking me up. I am so happy that I'll get to see him every week! Hopefully the drama keeps getting better and remains fun!

Of course I am still following Vampire Detective, Jackpot and Entertainer. It's weird, I don't particularly care for these series as a whole but I do enjoy watching the episodes...maybe it has to do with Entertainer's charm, Lee Joon's coolness and Yeo Jingoo's insane talent... I am really looking forward to how they will all end though.

Oh my god. Wannueng Jaa Pben Superstar. I think Thai dramas are still stuck in the makjang phase (I say this even though WJPS is the only one I've watched ever). The female lead makes the whole drama entertaining though, with all her "raps", "horrible acting" and other antics.

That is a quite interesting idea to think of drama evolution and to classify the countries accordingly.
First for me would be maybe Japan followed by Korea then Taiwan and than China. But this is based on my quite limited knowledge ... What do you think?

I don't particularly like the idea of evaluating dramas according to the country of origins. I think each drama industry is interesting and offer their share of quality entertainment. However, if I go according to how many dramas I have seen from East Asian countries it would be:

Korea (by far the most at 100+)
Japan (20 something)
Thailand (5)
Taiwan (2)
China (2)

It is interesting that you would bring this up. I wonder what other people think about Kdramas, Jdramas, Lakorns..etc and whether they do have a preference and why.

----- I wonder what other people think about Kdramas, Jdramas, Lakorns..etc and whether they do have a preference and why.

I hope you don't mind my answer
I am more of Jdrama viewer, I can't watch a Jdrama without fully committed to it, but the subs is slow, that's what slowed me, I also watch lots of anime.
The thing is Jdrama has limited setting but it feels like they used it to the max so it hits right in the feeling,

Cdrama - the period one, it's fascinating, complicated, the acting is better , it just had lots of sad ending and I still can't watch RPG drama,

Kdrama - the rom-com and makjang (seriously, makjang is one of the hell guilty pleasure session with great set up),
I like lots of Kdrama and they always had good visual so it's easy to start watching, it pleasant,
it just almost everything resolves with love stories which make me feel like, is that even the real answer or just to make it like a success love stories?
but saeguk drama is definitely good in general,

Western a drama - only after it ends, haha
but they have lots of good quality drama, it just never ends in one season which kinda make me lost the track for next season, I usually forget lots of things that happen in prev season which result in me can't be connected with the new season,

Tw-drama - the unique only for laugh type of drama but some of it is just really really good with the stories/material but not the acting, even FTLY has this 2nd chance theme that really about 2nd chance

funny enough for me,
Kdrama by number is the most I start but the least I finished by percentage, I dropped lots of drama or resumed it years later or FF for knowing the ending than Cdrama and Jdrama, TW drama and the mainland Cdrama get draggy as hell so even FF button doesn't change the story,

everything has its pro and cons, it's a luck to find one that hit the feels at the moment

I don't think I'm an expert on this, but I read a lot of drama descriptions and reviews before deciding whether to watch them, so I think I know enough of a country/region's general trends (only the bigger markets really).

Take Thailand for example, they are doing remakes of all the hit Asian dramas like It Started With a Kiss, Full House and others recently. Their dramas are also more like fan-fiction turned dramas with really exaggerated story lines (I've read reviews saying that there are, to put it mildly, forced relationships and then romantic development, which is totally not up my alley). That's why I'm under the impression that Thai dramas are in the ultra-makjang phase.

China is always adapting to trends. When Taiwanese dramas were the big thing (FTLY, Autumn's Concerto), they put in loads of TW actors as leads, employ TW directors, and write similar scripts. Now that the Hallyu wave is stronger, they have Korean actors, Korean directors, and Korean production crews. You can see obvious changes in style from the fashion to the cinematography. However, those dramas usually suck big time. China's strong suit has always been period/historical dramas. The plot is usually miles better (for some reason) and production quality is fantastic simply because of the budget they have. The historical epics are so beautiful to watch.

Taiwanese dramas have been stagnating. It's sad to say but they virtually haven't changed a bit since the late 2000s. They always employ the same old cliches. There is also the problem that the market is a lot smaller, and all the top actors are enticed to act in China where they get paid 10x more and get better scripts too. The new actors have zero charisma imo. When you look at the cast no one really catches your eye.

Japanese dramas... I think they are very mild in general. Some of them are great, some are like plain water (really bland). The format is usually episodic plots strung together by an overarching story line (or no overarching story line) which means pacing is usually much better than Kdramas. Also why they handle procedural dramas a lot better (HK dramas are very good in this aspect as well). I hate their historical dramas though; the anniversary ones. I find them super duper boring, and the man's hairstyle and costumes worse than the gat-hanbok combination.

...

...

Korean dramas have the biggest love focus (along with TW). Seriously. No country produces more romcoms. For the other regions you expect love to be built on a bigger plot about something else, but for a lot of Kdramas romance is the main thing. The settings and stuff are mostly just there to supplement the romance. Ironically, I feel that the ones without are usually more entertaining. Pacing is also a huge issue. Right now, Kdramas are branching out to other genres. It's great, but it seems that people are not too receptive.

In general, Korea and Japan are like trend-setters, whereas China and Thailand are followers. TW was sort of a follower but now they just do their own dull things. Almost all of them now are on the adaptation trend. Webtoons/manhwas for KR, mangas for JP, novels for CN, and hit Asian dramas for Thailand. My personal preference is KR > JP = CN = HK > TW > Thai.

0

I generally skip historical dramas because they're not my cup of tea, but based on my experience here's how I see dramas.

Japan has the better and more varied procedurals. And it's not just crime or medical procedurals: There are school procedurals, publishing procedurals, helping people procedurals, etc. It's in all shapes and colors. I think that's where they shine. They also have the saddest dramas and have a tendency to play the terminal illness trope to death (pun intended).

Korea has the better rom-coms, mostly only because they can be consistently funny. Japanese romcoms usually have this cynical outlook on romance, as if they're tired of making simple fun romcoms.

The TW dramas I've seen are usually romcoms. Aside from the Japanese manga adaptations, they tend to have a dark twist somewhere in the middle, but generally still are not as cynical as Japanese ones.

My country's dramas (Philippines), usually are funny, but will involve an overt critique of society and some ridiculous forced drama. They're usually really long, too, and so will focus on the cute a bit too much.

I am in a room full of analog hardware (tvs, projectors, viewing tables, editing tables, speakers...etc.) and there's only two other people here with me listening to their own thing. It's like having 3 hermits together in a room listening to stuff out of a time capsule. REALLY QUIET!
I use to work as a administrative assistant...now that was stressful and each time I thought I had a moment of quiet to catch my breath the phone would ring. This is actually a nice change even though it can be a bit boring a times.

Jackpot almost lost me too but I am glad I stuck with it even though it will probably end up being forgettable. I'll watch anything with Yeo Jingoo though lol

'Lucky Romance' held a press conference [from youtube]
You might have read what Hwang Jeong-eum and Ryu Jun-yeol said already.

For example, Ryu Jun-yeol was asked if he feels burden after his previous drama 'Reply 1988' had much success. He said “I always have a lot of worries before starting a new project. But if you ask if I feel burdened because of Reply 1988, no I don't. After starting filming all of my worries were taken care of and I am happily filming.” He said "Rather than showing new side of me or breaking out from my previous act, it’s more important to do my best on ‘Lucky Romance’ through efforts. I don't even have enough time to do that” (for his role, he said he researched genius and doctors.)
Of course they had to ask about Ji Sung and Hye-ri in 'The Entertainer' currently airing in the rival channel. He said " I don't really feel competitive. Rather than competing, we cheer and support each other on and tell each other to be healthy."

For Hwang Jung-eum, when asked why she is returning to work so soon after her marriage, she said, “I think marriage and career are two different things. I got married, and I want to continue my acting career as well.. I was so hooked on 'Descendants of the Sun' that I wanted to take on a melodrama, but no one has tried to cast me in one since I got married. I got many calls for romcom so I chose the best one out of them." She also said she felt acting was fun for the first time when she did 'High Kick', but later people said she had limit as an actress, so she took upon challenge and did 'Secret' where she found she was doing melo/crying acting, and she got confidence on melo acting. About the chemistry with RJY, she said "It is good. nothing else."

The TV series has not stayed entirely true to webtoon series. PD Kim Kyung-hee said, "Being loyal to the original would have yielded two to four episodes, so besides the concept of the female lead’s superstitious belief/lifestyle, we have taken some liberty and added more things like people. For instance, the occupation of the male lead character has been changed from a penny pincher building owner to a company CEO." She said one of reason was because it was unrealistic- how can he own a building saving money like that.

Three out of 4 leads (HJE, RJY, LCA) belong to the same agency and some feel suspicious? PD said "The two actors were our No. 1 choices, so we're extremely thrilled to be working with them," and she said the other two (Lee Chung-ah, Lee Soo-hyuk) could be strategic casting- which actor/actress can break their previous image. Lee Chung-ah said this was the first time for her to play a rich girl and felt burdened when someone mentioned about it (She prepares her role by learning English and research styling?). Lee Soo-hyuk said he has been playing dark and strong roles, but his character here is cheerful and young boy-like -which is the part he is satisfied. Actually he said Thesedays is his best time of his life. (But, but wasn't he like that already in Neighborhood Hero?). He also said he dreamed to play a sports player and prepared his role by practicing tennis and swimming (Hope to see lots of shirtless scene- lots!). LCA added "LSH is really cute in real life but he seems he doesn't know that, which makes him cute." RJY agreed that LSH is cute and LSH said RJY is really nice and cool hyung.

Still I was disappointed they changed the male lead from penny-pincher rich-but-petty guy to CEO of game developing company (Didn't we have this already? Loved Joo Sang-wook in Sly and single again)

I picked up two chinese dramas this week

1) My amazing boyfriend - highly recommended. utterly crap. It was compared to MLFAS. But the hero here does not have an iota of charm of kim soo hyun. Horrid acting and bizarre writing. The girl too, not a patch on jun ji hyun. So completely misleading comparison.

2) Les Interpretes - i watched 5 episodes but i'm going to drop it now. Why are all the guys in the show such asses ? Also, why the hell is training for being an interpreter being filmed liked you are training in the army. A girl gets expelled for wearing perfume on the first day of the institute! Bye-bye years spent on graduation. The show is just plain weird.

... back to kdrama land ... currently watching OHY, lucky romance, and mirror of the witch.

Eagerly awaiting 38 task force, W, uncontrollably fond (the 2nd teaser looks much better), moonlight drawn by the clouds

There's no way I can buy that someone, after years of uni education, pulls about a creepy-stalky "fan book" of her favourite interpreter and boasts about her obsessions to said interpreter in front of an entire class of professionals-in-training. There's comedic exaggeration and then there's depicting Chinese women as if they were totally brainless, incapable of anything but fawning over handsome males.

if it was just comic exaggeration, i think it would still be bearable. But the main lead is so obnoxious. All jobs are important. But i could understand it if the setup was the army, or they were doctors.

But here they are translators. And not even working in the foreign ministry too ... Right now they just translate for businessman and such. So the whole setup, the urgency, is beyond ridiculous.

I always wanted to learn a new language but seeing this, i don't even want to try.

You are right about the depiction of chinese women. And the men come off as too overbearing.... Is that a problem which chinese shows in general ??? I have seeen very few C-dramas but the one i liked the most 'love me if you dare' soon turned its capable lead heroine into damsel in distress

It's like they are trying to propose a scenario of "a star translator". But what they are showing has very little to do with how interpretation/translation world works. You don't get celebrities in this field, it's not show-biz.

Don't be put off by learning a language b/c of this show!

alua!

Really, a show about translators?!?!? Knock me over with a feather!

Yep, recovering translator here. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined anyone making a drama out of pawing through stacks of dictionaries to find the correct obscure term for left-handed widgets.

I remember hearing a depressing anecdote from a grad from the program I was in who was working in the field as a simultaneous interpreter. She (or a colleague) had to sit under the conference table -- presumably to be out of sight and out of mind. Just hearing it made me feel like Rodney Dangerfield.

When I was studying, I could never have imagined the translation aids that are available nowadays. Back then a word processor was a Selectric II with correction tape -- if you were lucky.

They've got interpreters... but I think it's more coincidental than anything. A Japanese show would be better at getting one interested in the profession (they're really good at picking the most random things and making them interesting, whether that's synchronised swimming or being a plasterer. Though I think Another Miss Oh is also currently doing well at giving us a glimpse into the world of a sound recordist).

I think MaB and MLFAS is different story, acting wise MLFAS better but story wise MaB did better,
I finished MLFAS heavy handed cause everything pretty but gas no substance
while Mab has the quirky thing and real substance in the story.
it wasn't utterly crap and explainable story,
a mutant wakes up by crash blood that linked them together, he got coma and look for the truth.

while MLFAS is just a weird celebrity meet alien neighbor who strangely also meet her past life, has a premonition about her but that thing never get talk again, all about MLFAS is just jun ji hyun being sassy and well loved. How alien get sick by germs and still alive for hundred years? why didn't he ages? did he really has purposes in earth rather than fall in love and be museum collector? Why it's her and not the other, just bc they were meet in that past life?

Mab suffering from using korean actor who also a model and idol like drama, he is not an actor or good actor but as story it explains how the plot work. There's police, lab guy, entertainment thing, then he has super blood that keeps him young and heals himself and others, that's why he is wanted, he didn't know how to fix himself and he realizes that keeping people alive from danger is not the solution, people lives as it is, there's no need for his intervention. The connection between lead is bc their shared blood,

the comparison made for buzz in the media, the story and the characters are not a carbon copy from MLFAS, did MLFAS has the sisterbond and the brothership??

but even if MaB suffer from the acting idol like Cdrama, it isn't utter crap, it shoot good, it explains itself,
and I can't believe you finished the crap you talking about,
I almost didn't finish MLFAS despite having smaller ep than MaB, I finished it way long after it aired bc it doesn't hold my interest.

ps: I think you just don't usually watch C-drama

Its a matter of choice i guess :)

.... I would rate MLFAS far far above MAB. The writing was more witty, more cohesive, the acting was more on point. It was a show where everything seem to come together and make for one hell of an interesting watch

i'll say it again I found the story of MAB utter rubbish. And more than the story, there was no emotional connect with the characters. I did not give a damn about any one - and when that happens the show becomes one big bore.

I have watched a couple of C-dramas, but you are right, not all that many. They just don't hit my buttons. The only one i liked was 'love me if you dare'

I may sound salty here but can you explain the alien power and the plot that cohesive in MLFAS?
where's is the connection? what motivate the bad guy that linked to the alien?
how they get connected? by the power of love?
why he can see past and future?

and since you finish the utterly rubbish show, how can you finish it without connected with the character?
maybe it bc the story,
you can just drop it or maybe you used FF button which is not a commendable tool for having a review about the drama

I can explain MaB story is you asked,
I can understand acting critique but the story is explainable and runs in the drama, which one is rubbish?
bc you don't understand how the language works or you don't connect with the character, so then the story become an utterly rubbish?

rubbish is such a harsh word for an actual well-written backstory and the reason of each character to do something, and I can explain this if you willing to asked and explain the writing in MLFAS

There are conflicting opinions about 'Pretty/other Oh Hae-young' as second female lead, and I was thinking about who are the awesome second female leads in the dramas we are familiar with. I think one of them is Yoo In-young.

Yoo In-young (32) was in 'Goodbye Mr.Black' broadcast-ending interview. We usually remember her as evil second female lead- 'Three musketeers', 'Mask', 'Oh my Vinus', etc. And you might agree she was great in 'You from Another star'. In GMB, she played different character from her usual role -who received love from two men -Cha Ji-won(Lee Jin-wook) and Min Sun-jae(Kim Kang-woo).
About the show YIY said, "I should say I feel sad, but the show just ended, so this is happy occasion being able to rest. At first I loved thinking I was receiving all the love, but that was so short, that I was disappointed. After the show ended, I thought about it and I assume that was process of transformation my drama character becoming calmer. As for the characters I played, one gave out evil feel in 'Mask', one gave out annoying feel in 'Oh my vinus', but in this show, character moved forward being nice. I am satisfied with it."
About the ratings, she said "Descendants of the Sun already got 20% ratings, we couldn't do anything about it, but I wondered if people who don't watch the DoTS might watch our show. So I expected 6.8%. There were actors who expected 3%. Actually I never thought we'd have such low ratings. We did overseas shooting having difficulties and all, and scripts were fun, so I felt disappointed. But once DoTS ended, ratings kept going up and ended in good note, which made everyone feel relieved."

In this show Yoo was not the one who did wrongs (Min Sun-jae did), but the one on the receiving end. "I didn't feel frustrated, but because the incidents dropped on me were so big that receiving/dealing with it was not easy. Also that torment was done in the name of love, I had hard time." Unlike her prideful image, Yoo has soft heart. In the show, her character Yoon Ma-ri decided to forgive Min Sun-jae and wait for him. She said "I think I will forgive him too. Since everything was settled. Her old love(Ji-won) met new love he really loves, and for Ma-ri, Sun-jae was the only thing left. Since Sun-jae got his punishment and wanted to be really nice and live well, I think I would forgive him and live thinking once I give my heart, we all can live peacefully. If Mari does not forgive him in this situation, how can she goes on living, doing what"

About villain characters she usually plays, she said "When I played evil character a few times in the beginning, yelling 'I am not like that' and getting angry made me feel refreshed. But later on it became harder on me. Sometimes character you play torments someone not because there is a clear reason for it, so even if I am doing it, I feel conflicted and struggle. Continuously getting angry and upset in the show seemed to make me become more sensitive." Still she tried to portray each character differently even if they are all evil characters, and she thinks that was the reason she could do it for a long time. "Whenever I played a rich person role or evil role, I wanted to show a little variety. I don't know how the viewers felt, but I tried to change to annoying evil character, real horrible evil character, or pitiful evil character. I also think I was lucky. When I first played the evil character, we had good ratings. Similar roles were offered, so I kept doing it. Once I got to do a Sageuk, and response was good, I got lots of offer for Sageuk."

About her ideal type, she said "From long ago, I always said Kim Tae-woo sunbae-nim is my ideal type. Now I am very close to him (so he went out of her ideal type range?). Now if I have to pick an ideal type I will choose (kim) Kang-woo oppa. When there was part that I couldn't understand in the scripts, I asked oppa. Just having him by my side I felt assured."
About the marriage, she said "I have this strong thought that everything will change the minute I get married. I feel I have to live complete different life from what I've collected so far. So I wondered 'I have lived working hard so far, how can I erase them all and start a brand new life?' So marriage seems like someone else's topic to me. Even though I am at that age (to think about marriage), I don't want to get married yet."

For the future she wants change in her image in dramas. "I will try to show change little by little, and hope that it does not feel unfamiliar/awkward. The viewers want familiar role, beauty(being pretty) role from me, but I don't like it. They say they like my short hair cut, but I can't show only pretty or likable side. I'd like to show different side according to the character I play. I hope people think "Wow, she is seriously trying hard for her acting and character.", rather than feeling odd.

Today is NBD (no boss day) - yay for the holiday! And I am on a roll.
Other news: Lee Yoo-ri (Jang Bo-ri) and Lee Pil-mo (Emergency couple) will appear as Do-kyung/Eric's (young) parents in OHYA. (maybe 31st they say)

As for variety, I became such fan of current king Music Commander of 'King of mask singer', and for the first time in my life thinking about joining in fan club.
And I found he sang the Muiiya (of Six Flying Dragons) rock version. I have been listening to it like forever.

It goes to show how subjective beauty standards are. Personally, if I had to only pick the guys for their looks alone and not take their personality into consideration (which would never happen but this is a what-if scenario lol ), I would pick Ryu Junyeol. I just prefer the boy-next-door type look over super-model cookie cutter look. I simply find it more aesthetically pleasing to my eyes. It all depends on one's own personal preference.

And you are right, that comment about plastic surgery was way more than harsh. It was completely unwarranted. He or she should have just said they didn't personally find Junyeol attractive and leave it at that. Why should Junyeol go spend thousands of dollars and suffer immense pain simply to meet one stranger's personal standards of beauty... completely ridiculous.

Why does Ryu jun yeon have to go through PS? Does PS gurantee is the only way to become beautiful? Besides what constitute a beutiful face is truly subjective. I find Kdrama men and women with PS lack of interesting facial features,,, I sometimes watch Get It Beauty and found many audiences ( almost all female) have something done to their face but they seem so artificial. Even my 12 years old daughter find them a bit gross( I am sorry to say this but this is the word she used) because they look something off .
Lee Pil Mo( from Happy Home) recently must have done double eyelids surgery and he looks more handsome than before judged by its conventional beauty measurement,,, yet I actually prefer his previous face.
I am not a fan of Ryu Jun Yeon but I think as he matures and him continue to be a good man(eventually personality shows on our faces as we age), his look would mature nicely without ps. Men/women with PS sometimes looks rather off as they get older.

tbh I got your comment, you mean it's quite ridiculous to choose RJY over LSH in just brief appearance cause appearance matter in attraction,

being a good guy/bad guy will come later when you know the person, but if you must ask people about who they will get attracted to they will just say RJY is nice but not my style to be polite,

I don't think he needs PS/reconstruction surgery, though, it's okay to not beautiful,

but I get the cheated feeling when the show painted the character as this handsome, good looking perfect thing without the appropriate person inside and outside, just be objective,

there are people that not good looking as other but they aren't always the lesser choice bc time will prove what matter to the couple,
better paint him as the kind guy, normal looking and moderately desirable

Plowed through the prologue in Monster (which was straight up telenovela realness), expecting things to get better at some point...and they kinda haven't? Not sure I'll go on at this point. Except for Jung Bo-seok the acting is amateur hour, and the director is just so inept it's unbelievable (I miss Yoo In-sik so much :( ). The soundtrack is so misguided it makes serious scenes hilarious and funny scenes embarrassing, he's ruining the only good performance he has to work with, and the sets look so cheap and fake it's unreal--if Star Trek: The Original series was filmed in modern Korea, this is what it would look like (that show had a budget of 5 USD an episode lol). To cap it all off, the writing reads like bad History of the Salaryman fanfic. I hope they get their shit together next time (and that Yoo In-sik takes them back).

Tried Jackpot and Mirror of the Witch as well. Both are visually very impressive, which is a very nice counterpoint to Monster atm, though they have their issues as well. idk, I'm still waiting for a show to grab me this year.

I'm also watching The Queen's Classroom, which is from a couple years ago, and it's really reaffirming my love for kdrama. As an American, I've never expected anything from child actors, but Korea has definitely spoiled me in that regard. The kids are all wonderful, and Go Hyun-jung is doing such a subtle job with an over-the-top character that it's a joy to watch.

Had to put Queen Insoo on hold because I was gobbling it up too fast lol. I'm just getting to what's supposed to be the best part (Jeon Hye-bin, Chae Si-ra, and Kim Mi-sook are about to go head-to-head), but I couldn't put this show down even in the early days with Moonjong, Danjong, and Sejo (speaking of great child actresses...Jin Ji-hee's performance was so amazing). The subs are up to episode 51!!!! Whoever is subbing this drama is my hero <3

The Queen's Classroom is a lovely show, and one that is sadly underrated. I was also skeptical about the young actors, but they're absolutely fantastic, particularly since they have to carry most of the dramatic weight of the show. Also glad to hear the Queen Insoo subs are coming along. I've been waiting to start it until they're finished (or close to finished) because I know it's a long, slow process.

Yeah, I was expecting Go Hyun-jung to wow me, but they're all amazing. I was never a fan of child actors until I started watching kdramas...now a good chunk of my favorite actors are kids lol. It will be exciting to watch their generation grow up.

It's sad to hear that it's been underrated (I'm really late to the party as always). I haven't seen the original Japanese version, but I have a hard time seeing how it could be better. Every episode has me laughing and crying.

Yay for Queen Insoo! I've been there at viki a few times kissing up to the subbers because I want to watch it again when it's completed. I wish I could send them sojus just to say thank you.

I love/hate Jackpot at the same time and I tend to make excuses for the show because 3 of my favorite actors are in it and I love the history too.
I'll ride with it till the end and I'm glad it's almost over lol.

I glossed over Mirror of the Witch which reminds me of Moon/Sun and they just had to cast Kim Young-Ae to play the same over the top dowager queen in it too.
I'm not quite sure the famous Doctor Heo Joon is being part of this dark magic/witchcraft type of show. Is he going to develop some miracle medicine to rid the evil magic with or just using his name to attract more viewers?
I like Kim Sae-ron but not enough to watch a show just because she is in it like I would do for Yeo Jin-goo and Kim Yoo-jung.

Queen’s Classroom is a gem. I love Go Hyun-jung and these young actors carried their own I was very impressed.

Yep, I've kissed up to them a ton (I just use my real name over there). It's a miracle they're doing it at all, and they're so close to finishing!! I never thought I'd be able to watch it. I stopped before Jeon Hye-bin took center stage because I knew I wouldn't be able to pace myself at all at that point lol, but I'm so excited to see her fight Chae Si-ra and to see how JHY handles Yeonsangun.

Oh no. I'm only a couple episodes into Jackpot so far, but I'm enjoying the directing and of course Yeo Jin-goo and Choi Min-soo are awesome. We'll see how far I get lol.

I was also reminded of Moon/Sun, which is never a good thing lol, and I don't really go in for bizarro takes on real historical figures (plus the acting besides Kim Sae-ron and Yeom Jung-ah is pretty meh), but the directing keeps bringing me back. It's just so pretty haha.

Kim Yoo-jung and Yeo Jin-goo are my faves too--I can't wait until they can start headlining stuff besides youth dramas. I have a soft spot for Jin Ji-hee as well.

Oh I didn't mean to scare you away from Jackpot. I

Jackpot can be intriguing and makes more sense from a historical perspective.
I think this writer is expecting the viewers to know their basic history of this era.
(I wouldn't have loved and intrigued by Conspiracy in the Court and Eight Days if I didn't know about the history even though it was fictional).

I don't know the details of the Musin Rebellion but I do know enough to see why and where the writer is taking the story. I recognized names of the rebel leaders (there were 7 but only 2 that in the drama so far).
It sounds like I'm making excuses for the drama but it does make a lot more sense when history is there to explain it.

Don't worry, I'll just keep watching and see how I feel. I really don't know anything about the Musin Rebellion either, so this will be interesting. When I first started watching sageuk I'd do research as I watched to understand where the story would go and why, but now I have the basics down on a lot of kings so I can watch and appreciate from the beginning. Mostly I'm interested in social history though, which is why I love Jung Ha-yeon so much...he really seems to get not only how their political and social systems worked, but also how it might feel to try and survive in such brutal times.

Hi, Kiara (and juniper, again)

I'm really glad to eavesdrop on your discussion of JACKPOT. I wasn't initially attracted to it, but silly me: I should know by now that the gambling is just a cover for other activities. Then I read some comments here on DB from other viewers that it was running out of steam or something. Now that I hear the historical angle is good, I'm game to give it a shot. Onto the list with you, show!

Could either of you recommend an outline of Korean history that you've found helpful? I'm not up to reading the Annals of Joseon -- unless they've got a good English translation and an even better index and it's online. I sheepishly admit that I usually check Wikipedia, along with the recaps and reviews here at DB, and at HanCinema and couple of other sites I've happened across.

Thanks!

Happy Friday, all (happy graduation, me! :) ) I hope you all have glorious Fridays filled with smiles and happy surprises and a bit of korean drama.

I'm really really happy with dramaland at the moment, it's suddenly abundant with watchable dramas! I can sense my list getting longer by the second. For now I'm following:

Entertainer--I look forward to this show every week. I just love them all so much, every single one! And it cracks me up that Man-shik has not one but two (possible three? I'll have to watch and check again) pairs of footy pajamas. He's so great.

All About My Romance: Weeeell, I finished it (dragged myself kicking and screaming through the second half). It was an adventure, I shall not be returning.

Dramaworld: Oh my gosh I loved that show!! I finished it on Netflix and really really hope they make another season. I'd be down for that. The tropes were played to perfection, just enough exaggeration to let us in on the joke. I loved it.

Beautiful Gong-shim: the antics! The heartbreak! When they were playing hide and seek, I kept putting my hand over my mouth like "Oh, no... please darling, be better to yourself than that." It was really good. I'm not so fond of the birth secret stuff, but I think I'm still in for the ride.

Mirror of the Witch: Still rocking the dark fairytale vibes. In OT a few weeks ago someone (Redfox? Was that you?) asked what Grimm's fairytales would make a good drama. Mirror of the Witch. That fairytale makes a good drama. :) I'm love it so far (just not some of the CGI).

Ahahahaha as if I don't already have enough shows to watch, I also have questions about these two (I want to start one of them, no idea which one): Bride of the Century; and Princess' Man. Thoughts on which is better? Alternate recommendations? Any good rom-coms I could marathon?

Thanks and have a great weekend! :) :)

for me , if my memory serves me good
Bride for the century is easy to watch, the couple is cute and has enough mystery+ supernatural thing, past life and love story

The princess's man is a heart-tugging story including tears and heavy hearts, it gets me hard.

so which one you prefer at the moment?
I personally think TPM is better for I don't think I ever re-watch bc it's really romance type that makes you sob but I do re-watch BoC because it's fun enough

Just wondering, what happened in the latest episode of Refresh Man? I don't watch it but I follow the channel on Viki. I keep getting messages in my inbox saying that they had to delete a scene because it was inappropriate. Anyone know what that scene was?

Finally finished watching Ode to Joy, great drama. I'm so glad An Di and Wei broke up. I didn't feel their relationship at all. Can't wait for season 2.

I'm about to start watching the season finale of The Flash on Hulu. The Man in the Iron Mask will finally be revealed.

Need to start watching Luther on Netflix. I saw an episode on PBS and it caught my interest. The ex-wife is a bit crazy.

I need to finish watching Sherlock on Netflix. I'm only on S1E2.

Oh my goodness! Another Luther viewer!! ...... I also found this series on my PBS station and I've continued watching. I'm hooked! ...... It's intense, dark and the villains are beyond creepy but it's soooooo good!

The wife is nothing if you want to talk about "crazy". I won't say anything else so as not to spoil anything. But, keep watching and you'll see.

The scene in Refresh Man in question (I haven't watched the drama but I heard about the matter on Tumblr) was of a guy doing "blackface" (a non-black painting his body black in order to play the role of a black man - a racist practice that was done a lot in Hollywood in the early to mid 20th century- see Birth of a Nation) and going to a pharmacy joking that he wants a product that will make him white. From what I saw and heard it was a horrible scene made in bad taste. Horribly racist! I am glad that Viki deleted it and I hope they will release a statement explaining exactly why the scene had to be remove to bring awareness to these racist jokes that are sadly still present nowadays.

Beautiful Gong Shim and Dear My Friends really good. I don't know why people don't watch it.
Watched ep 1 of Oh Hea Young Again and i can see a mess. Should I watch next ep?
I think Lucky Romance will have a lot of scene to laugh such as She Was Pretty, Beautful Gong Shim but ep 1 so boring and the final scene, and don't know why people laugh because that, it's too ordinary, writers and directors need more creative. Again, nothing to watch in Wed-Thurs timeslot.

And dramaworld, it's good at some first ep and it become 'makjang' after that.
I don't know why people keep talk about 'Korean Dramas' just 'romance' and have dream guys with poor girls. It's too old, that's a shame for who love Korean dramas like me.

I think you should continue OHY past ep 1, many people love it,
I have problem with it too but it worth to check and see if it match your style or not,
1st episode of drama especially Kdrama doesn't always good and represent the whole drama vibe,

I think give both 4 ep chance cause I think both is well acted

True I never judge any show any where whether in Korea, the U.S. or anywhere else by its first episode unless it's outrageously bad.

Required fields are marked *

In my humble opinion the first episode, generally in almost every drama is a bit choppy. A drama will find its footing later on (some never do though).
So,do give OHYA a chance.
Though I must warn you first that this not at all a fast paced, sunny, continuously laugh-out-loud sort of drama with perfectly cut out black and white characters.
This is more of a slow, thoughtful drama, with very humanly flawed (but lovable) characters and a lot of heart. There are many funny, quirky moments to lighten the mood, but overall this is definitely not Gong shim/She was Pretty type drama :)

Truthfully speaking, OHY 1st ep is a mess, for me personally. It's not until ep 4 that i am completely hooked. That happens for many of my fav shows tbh. So maybe give it a chance for few more eps and see if it matches your style. After ep 4 everything is so much better though ?

Happy Friday Beanies! :)

The sun is shining with all it's might and I just came home from a nice walk (read: forced walk because no busses came. It included tight jeans that were way too hot and a bladder about to burst because no restroom was anywhere around).

I'm loving Entertainer right now! In the middle of the latest ep and ep 11 was just great! I love how they don't keep all the revelations until the last episode :) AND. I found the real life Chan Hee! I kid you not, there's this 16 yo trainee in FNC's new survival program (d.o.b. - it's a band vs a dance group, so actually quite refreshing and kinda fun to watch) - not only is his name actually Chan Hee, but he actually looks like he could be his son lol :D He's also got that big innocent smile, though it doesn't really show as much in pictures as on screen. Was so surprised when one of the other trainee's said his name and his face came on screen lol.

I started Lucky Romance, only saw ep 1 so far. It's fine, but nothing grand. HJE isn't my cuppa tea, but RJY is growing on me. The story had some fun moments, but also a loooot of clichées, but let's see how it'll carry on. Wasn't originally planning on watching at all, but then I saw the recap and me love me some math genius. I'll watch anything with a math wiz in it (Numbers <3).

1n2d - I LOVE Donggu! But I hope they find another nickname, it doesn't really suit him. As a bookworm I love that they finally have a guy like that on the team and also... Flower Boy Duo = yessssssss..... The bromance. It needs to happen. They're not only both handsome, they're also both really intelligent it seems and I can't wait to see what happens :)

I tried to watch Reply 1994, but completely failed. I liked the first one, but didn't love it, so I just can't be bothered. Will try the newest some time soon though, with all the hype and shooting of actors to fame, I'm getting really curious.

Hope you'll have a sunny weekend! :)

I tried OHYA, but it's not really for me atm. I kind of like following a lot of shows at once, but I get stressed out if I have to catch up on several old stuff. Right now I'm watching both King of Mask and 1n2d s3, trying to watch all of it, but the episodes are sooo long and they're constantly adding new ones *feels like headless chicken running from one to the other, from old to new*

Don't worry about the multiple post continuation thing, I'm no good at it either ha.

Re Elbe-walk: yeah, his humor is definitely one of a kind.... except this wasn't a joke. He's got a terrible sense of proportion lol.
It can get really, really hot in Hamburg during summer. That time was especially "bad" though, sometimes even 40C in THE SHADE.
Vor Frelsers Kirke's tower - it's very windy haha. I love that church steeple, it's one of my favorite buildings in Copenhagen, which has so many gorgeous ones to choose from.

I think the only music I listen to from the 80s is classic rock.... Billy Joel, Bowie, MJ, Police... But not much else. The closest I get to punk is U2's post-punk minimalism from their earliest albums lol. I did have to analyze Sex Pistols' God Save the Queen for a school assignment though, both musically and lyrically. It's not really my thing generally speaking.

Welcome to the weird side! I'm so happy you loved FTI's Pray! It's such an amazing song. It's a pity they're always underappreciated in SK because of their genre. I don't really enjoy their older songs like "I Wish" a whole lot. Even though they were always talented, that style doesn't really speak to me (and not to themselves either as far as I've heard them say lol). But their new stuff and Japanese stuff I absolutely love. You should try and have a listen to "You Don't Know Who I Am", it's such a happy song (it's in Japanese though, but don't think you'd mind that? ;)). They're also hilarious during interviews. Way too honest for their own good and saying and doing weird and inappropriate things. The amount of shocked interviewers I've seen is pretty huge by now lol. Their 5-episode Coming Out reality show cracked me up and it's also such a good way to learn more about the way popular rock bands are treated in SK. It's not easy, even if everyone knows who you are and even some of your songs...

People usually tend to get confused by my multi-genral love of music (will literally listen to everything but heavy metal), it's great that you took a listen to some of the songs I listed and liked them despite the huge leaps in genre! I will definitely have a listen to the artists you named and get back to you (I just don't have the time today)! :)

Music really does make pronunciation so much easier! I had a Brit phase where most of my music was from the islands and I ended up with a British accent, though now it's a weird mix of that, American and ... who knows what LOL.

History of the Kings of Britain is fab and such an easy, quick read! I definitely think myths and legends have a grain of truth in them, but the exaggeration and symbolism-mistaken-for-literality is chuckle-inducing.
kiegoi an nayo - Korean romanization for "I don't remember" (if my research has not deceived. So it should be taken with a grain of salt. But try looking up Jung Joon Young's "Spotless Mind" lyrics, they use the word remember a lot and I learned a lot of words from that song (I love it, it's so good. Listened to it constantly a couple of months ago)).

Things are getting loooong... And almost completely non-Korean entertainment industry related lol!

Just noticed you calling FTI niedlich, HAHA it perfectly describes how they used to be (but Hong Ki would probably get mad and say they're manly lol). I still can't believe they're the same age and older than me. Those babyfaces... And they've already had hugely successful careers for 9 years both music and acting wise.... Seriously questioning what on earth I've been doing with my life so far LOL. All these KPop artists start soooo young. I wonder whether that's particularly healthy....

Anyways! Seems I ramble on and on about everything these days. I just spent 3½ hrs talking with a friend. Stayed that many hours extra at uni simply because we got talking ha!

I'm off for dinner! :)

I am currently juggling four shows of Yoon Si Yoon, or as known in 2D1N, Yoon Dong Goo. It all started with few posts of him in 2D1N doing mud wrestling with another member. Next thing you know, I was watching that variety show. I am continually watching as it gives me glimpses of his personality. He seems to be full of positive energy, and that makes him unique compare to other members. I love that. Yoon Si Yoon is also just pure adorable. Seeing him in his Titanic outfit in the recent episode is one example of that.

I am also in Episode 12 of his breakthrough role in Baker King, Kim Tak Gu. This drama is an easy watch with its makjang plots. It's not a drama I would normally watch, but Kim Tak Gu’s road to success is what I'm rooting for. That and all the breads.

This week I started watching Flower Boy Next Door. I'm currently in Episode 6, and so far I'm loving this drama. This is how you do a romantic comedy, with lots of character development. I find some of the scenes funny as well. Jin Rak is making me wonder if someone is so into me, I just never noticed. He is so sexy with that slight facial hair. Enrique Geum is killing it as well. He is so hyper, but not very annoying. He is still a child. Yoon So Yoon is perfect for this role. Heck I did not know he had that in him after watching him in Baker King.

Lastly, I'm watching YSY’s current drama, Mirror of the Witch. I am liking the drama as well at the moment. The fantasy elements with its gorgeous cinematography and top notch visual effects are the reasons I watch them late at nights with all the lights turned off. I don't see much of YSY, but I do enjoy it when I do see him.

Looking at his resume, Yoon Si Yoon seems to making do with his promise of being an actor everyone can be proud of. He seems to enjoy acting, and continually pick diverse roles for his dramas. As a viewer, I'm thankful for that. It's hard to be offered a drama, let alone a drama where actors (and actresses) can be challenged. Yoon Si Yoon seems to be enjoying both at the same time. I look forward to seeing more of him in his future endeavors.

Happy OT Beanie world!

Omo omo!I started Gong Shim!If the show keeps on being this funny, I'm going to stick with it!Namgoong Min wearing The Wig and barely covered in a jacket is my new "crush" :D

Entertainers : Ah!I feel slightly less irritated about the romance now that Hyeri has toned down quite a lot. But still, Hyeri's portrayal of her character leaves much to be desired. Not her fault really, it's just Ji-Sung and the rest are doing a fabulous job and I can't help but compare her against them.(Am I being too mean? I really liked her in Seonam Girls.. though). *goes away to prepare a big fluffy comfy basket for my poor, courageous puppy Jinu*

OHYA: Sigh! What a lovely show! And how real all these people are.. I read somewhere that people were disappointed with our Hae Young for having thoughts like all women on earth except her were dead etc. But that kind of thoughts (at least to me) makes her seem so very..human. Kudos to Seo Hyun Jin for showing us a flawed, but strong and an endearing soul in our Hae Young.

The Promise: About 20 or so episodes to go so things are happening quickly. Not complaining though I find this frequent appearance of DNA testing reports rather silly. ?
Bring on more pretty dresses show, and I will look past the silliness!

Flower in Prison: Interesting story. Loved the child Ok-Nyeo. The grown up Ok-Nyeo..not that much, but like her well enough to continue watching.

Jackpot: To watch or not to watch?I had stopped at episode 10 hoping to continue once it has finished airing. Probably leave it for a while until things are a bit quiet. The cinematography is too lovely not to watch :)

Other stuff: Excited because I've finally got my hands on Terry Pratchett's last Discworld book. Looking forward to the long weekend with my books again!!!?

Basically a loser ends up falling in love at first site with a woman who turns out to have a daughter Umi who is blind and deaf. So he decides to try and help her by becoming a sort of Anne Sullivan character. I'm not very good at explaining about the dorama but I've cried in all the eps so far.

Yes – one of those odd shows that have nothing going for it (no popular storyline, no buzz before it started airing, no famous actors – although the mom is a familiar face) but that come in fresh because they simply do their own thing. Which, in this case, is a really tough, but very moving human story that makes you reflect on all kinds of things.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend, Beanies!

Aloha, All!

The Hawai'ian voyaging canoe Hokule'a [Star of Gladness] is working its way up the East Coast and is presently in the Chesapeake Bay at Annapolis. She's scheduled to arrive in New York on June 5 and will be there until the 18th. Her final stop on the East Coast will be in New England in late June/July. Hokule'a has been circumnavigating the globe using traditional methods since setting out from Honolulu to Tahiti in 2013... replicating her first voyage during the Bicentennial.

Hi PakalanaPikake!
Aloha and thanks for the link to the Hokule'a, what a wonderful story. Do you know how long they will be in Annapolis before going to NY? The schedule doesn't really indicate anything between DC and NYC.

I saw too late that you answered me on last week's OT about the expression "not the brightest bulb in the chandelier". In my family this gets shortened a lot to "not the brightest bulb" followed by a knowing glance or eyebrow wiggle that implies the rest. Or you can modify it by the context of your conversation: in our case, maybe "not the fastest canoe in the race", for example ? I'm trying to think of other examples, we should probably ask Beanies to add suggestions. Oh, "not the sharpest knife in the drawer" is an old one.

Happy Memorial Day to you!

Aloha, bbstl...

Hokule'a must just have been sailing past Annapolis... See my reply to Kehinde below for excrutiating detail. ;-)

I was able to find info on some of the events in NYC while Hokule'a is in port.

Glad you spotted my post from previous OT. The chandelier part is what tickled my funny bone. Now that I think of it, it's like aerobic exercise for your eyebrows. I bet Siwon would be great at it.

I remembered that my Dad used to use the term dimbulb -- run together as one word. I don't know whether a it's a New Englandism, or slang from his youth... or a turn of phrase by Granddad, who was a creative coiner of resounding epithets when the occasion warranted...

A couple of sandwiches short of a picnic -- I think I heard that one on BUFFY.

It was about 87F on Friday, and is supposed to hit 89F again here in North Jersey -- with continuing air quality alerts.

You have a lovely Memorial Day weekend. Keep comfortable and hydrated. ;-)

Thank you for all the info about the Hokule'a, it's very inspiring for me. I will surely seek out "Wayfinders". I had read often in the past about a big surfing competition named for a famous Hawaiian surfer named Eddie Aikau who lost his life trying to save the crew of an outrigger canoe that had been swamped - well, it turns out the canoe was the Hokule'a.

Haha Siwon certainly could give lessons on use of facial muscles, couldn't he? Mr. Rubber Face. I love the efficiency of 'dimbulb'. It feels to me like it should be accompanied by a slight shake of the head? Perhaps a bit of side-eye? I wonder is it does date back to your grandfather. Funny what constituted too great an insult to say out loud in those days: my mother's friends would call people a "krej" because it was too rude to say "jerk" straight out. What those ladies must think of what they hear today?

A couple sandwiches short of a picnic! Wonderful! I will try to think of more.

I'm in the middle of the US where we will be swampy hot and humid as well for the holiday. I wonder if the tropical storm will push on all the way up the coast to you (and the Hokule'a). You stay hydrated, too!

Aloha, Kehinde...

I read about the Hokule'a voyage a couple of years ago and it's been in the back of my mind. I came up for air a day or two ago and checked. Whew! She's coming to NYC earlier than originally announced.

There's a nifty link on the above website to the tracker which shows the canoe's location in real time. You have to zoom in far to see the name of the creek.

It's 4:30AM on Saturday, 5/28, and according to the online tracker, Hokule'a is moored near Chesapeake City, MD, situated on the north bank of Back Creek, a tributary of the Elk River well north of Annapolis. Back Creek meets Chesapeake Bay on its eastern shore , and then cuts clear across the peninsula to the Delaware River at the little dorf of Delaware City.

I don't know the planned route from there. I suspect that Hokule'a will sail downstream to Delaware Bay, along the Jersey Shore, and into New York Harbor. I wonder if she could be seen from Barnegat Light? Or the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. (Hmmm -- no stopping!)

Patagonia will host crewmembers from Hōkūle’a’s Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage for a Storytellers’ Evening on Thursday, June 9 to open the 2016 Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge outrigger canoe races.
When: Thursday, June 9 at 7:00pm
Where: Patagonia Soho, 72 Greene Street, Lower Manhattan; tel. (212) 334-5213

The 2016 Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge will feature the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s canoe Hōkūle’a at Hudson River Park’s Pier 26 on Saturday, June 11, from 10am until 5pm. Free tours and educational programming.

Hi Beanies,
The only drama I am looking forward to right now is Five Children. I started up a few, but I find it hard to stick with them. They are using the same old dry tropes and overacting. Ugh. Is anyone else finding this? I am trying out Beautiful Gong Shim and so far, it interests me. The older sister seems to really have some self-esteem issues, but perhaps because the father is such a loser.

I never really understand the kids working to pay off the parent's debt. Is that because my parents didn't require me to do that? Does that go on in other countries? It just seems that in KDramas there are so many irresponsible parents (especially financially).

Okay, I'm off to enjoy my day. This is Memorial Day Weekend in the US. In my town, they host an event called "Mule Days." People come from around the world to see and participate in the mule competitions. I plan to go to the parade, but that's all. I'm not one for crowds.

---kids working to pay off the parent’s debt

debt need a guarantee and if you old enough to become one, sometimes you become one and then it fall under your responsibility too--- one case,

Asian in general work on "we/us" rather than "me" so the problem becomes our problem if it related to the closest family member,
many people that left with big debt still work to pay it but as the child, I think helping as best as we can be the right manner, not totally overtake it if you can't but at least giving a hand for helping solve faster.

it's not that kids pay for parent's debt but family (kids+parents) paid for their debt since the money mostly used for the family (kids+parents) life expenses.
in Asian's family, it perfectly normal to get college/school/after school lesson paid by parents/relative since students loan is not the norm and not many jobs available (it change now, many people can easily have online shop as starter and more place accept students), this is aside from scholarship ofc.

so it's not taking a responsibility from the parents but working together to solve is faster, helping parents to pay it since again the debt mostly uses for the family (not the dad/mom only-greediness expenses) ,
most drama exaggerated the situation IMO, they make the dad is so irresponsible and one-sided also debt from a loan shark,
not every kid will help their father in their own irresponsible debt but can you ignore your family forever?
The debt collector will come to the family cause they want the money,
it wasn't really about who has the bigger responsibility, bc the parents definitely is, but to get it out faster since it ruins the daily life.
If you can solve it faster the it's better. The better way is paying it together and that's how the child also paying the family debts

that just my opinion, feel free to add

That's a really helpful explanation, I had never thought of it that way before. Unlike US kids, Korean kids are incurring school fees from pre-school on and aren't having jobs or scholarships plus US kids take some or most college debt onto themselves.

I do wonder about Gong Shim's parents and why they are in the financial straits they seem to be in. It looks like a very nice house and a nice lifestyle to be supported by one junior lawyer who also buys enough designer clothes to fill a bedroom-sized "closet". Hmmmmm.

On a related note, I'm suffering a kind of cognitive dissonance over Gong Shim's weird little father. I happen to be watching TWDR where that actor is playing the older version of the character LeeBangJi from Six Flying Dragons. Joseon's Greatest Swordsman, played in SFD by the very hunky and swoony Byun Yo Han. It's just not computing ?

You see, that is what I mean about being financially irresponsible. The parents should live within their means and the children should too.

Yup, I get you on that. It will take soooome fancy back story to explain that to us, won't it? ?

About irresponsible parents in KDramas, I thought it is just to make a story rather than there are more irresponsible parents (financially) in Korea. But then again, I was kind of shocked to hear about Park Bo-gum case - like It really exists? Also I hear many idols/entertainers take over financial responsibility for their family - I wonder if this is something to do with tight-net family relation in Korea?

I think many super successful famous people in the US take care of their families too. It's not because they are Asian, but because they have so much money.

In the US, we can deduct our debt from our taxes, so I doubt my parents would want me to pay off their debt. But then, the only debt they have is their mortgage, and that is an investment, not a true debt. I would certainly help out my parents if they were in financial need, but they aren't.

Sorry to miss you this week. Hope all's well. Exams?

I left some posts for you on OT #448, some of which rolled over to Page 2.

Oh, and we got a blast of Singaporean temperatures on Thursday -- 32C/89.6F, along with air quality warnings. Summer is starting with a bang.

Happy Friday everyone :)

I wonder if anyone has suggestions for a drama that is as addictive as possible, without the darkness, childhood tragedies and body counts that come with suspense thrillers. Either rom-coms or Liar-Game type shows might work (actually kicking myself for having watched Liar Game already); I just don't need angst this time. What dramas have made you lose track of time?

Unstoppable High Kick? I barely noticed the episode count.
also Sungkyukwan Scandal.
and perhaps Greatest Love. some angst, but adorkable angst.

Thanks Redfox!

I am a little intimidated by the episode count for High Kick though :) Perhaps I will download the first thirty or so episodes if I can find the subtitles; it sounds just right.

(Forgot to say that I have already watched Sungkyunkwan scandal and Greatest Love -- one of my all-time favourites; and Arang, Marriage not Dating, Ex-Girlfriend Club, High School King of Savvy, both Let's Eat instalments, and I suppose most of the recent-ish rom-coms -- skipped Come Back Ahjussi and She Was Pretty; perhaps those?)

then, perhaps also Flower Boy Ramyun Shop? very little angst (only the horny kind of angst)

oops, I am only recommending Jung Il Woo dramas. how did this happen

HK is really nothing. you will even feel unsatisfied when it does end. I could have done with 20 or so more episodes.

and to anyone wanting a rest from thrillers, I keep recommending Otomen (and now Kyoko no Bibouroko, with the same actor) they are so weird and so cute and short and just really feel-good.

I actually watched the first few minutes of Flower Boy Ramyun Shop and was a little put off by the guys, but I probably should give it another try, hoping for the girl to make them suffer :-p . But I hear ya, I can end up recommending anything with Cha Seung-won in it :) .

High Kick coming down. Thanks again! :)

spluttered at horny kind of angst. my interest in and love for that show seriously died down after those first few episodes with all that gorgeous horny angst.

My #1 addictive drama is Marriage Not Dating, but I see you already know that one. Other dramas that I marathoned straight through:
My Name Is Kim Sam Soon
Full House Thailand Version
Moon That Embraces the Sun
Bride of the Century
Beautiful Days

Have u seen Hoo Goo's Love? Im asshamed i watched it in 1,5 days. Not much angst. Not ur tipical male lead or theme and its so darn cute. I was hesitant to watch it for not liking UEE that much(before Marriage Contract) but it was a pleasent surprise, aside for her crying.

@Table122000, @Mandy

Bride of the Century looks fun; working on getting my hands on it :) . A little wary of Beautiful Days: Wikipedia mentions "terminal illness", and for me that is usually a deal breaker; not even contemplating Marriage Contract despite the high praises...

Unfortunately I have already seen Kim Sam Soon and Hogu (Hogu is on my occasional rewatch list :) ) but I will check Full House; that's one show I have heard about but never actually looked into.

Thanks everyone :)

Hi, John!

Glad you were checking out TAMPOPO, one of my all-time favorites.

Was wondering know how you liked it.

There’s a scene in it with the most beautiful a cappella singing I’ve heard in a long spell. It sounds so much like a sentimental German student drinking song, or my high school alma mater — or this:

The Whiffenpoof Song – The Yale Whiffenpoofs of 2014
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3ZWaHS21_E

If you understand Japanese, could you tell me if it’s a “real” school song, and if so, it’s name?

Domo arigato gozaimashita!

— Please pardon my Romanization. This is the extent of my Japanese! ?

Hotaru no Hikari, sung to the tune of Auld Lang Syne, is another graduation song in Japan. Apparently it was brought from Scotland to Japan by Yamao Yozo, one of the "Chosyu Five" in the 19th century (see https://alualuna.wordpress.com/2013/07/07/review-chosyu-five/).

Aloha, alua!

Thanks for your pointer to "Hotaru no Hikari." It's wild to hear Auld Lang Syne with Japanese lyrics.

It turned out to be a different song, Aogeba Tōtoshi. But that one, too, was an import from the West. "Song for the Close of School" was included by H.S. Perkins in the compilation Song Echo in Baltimore, Maryland in 1871. No wonder it sounded so old to me.

I enjoyed reading your review of Chōshū faibu/Chosyu Five. That is truly an amazing story. Five samurai sent to the West to study and bring back modern knowledge. It reminds me of Tsar Peter the Great of Russia studying shipbuilding -- I think in the Netherlands. It's now on my to-watch list. ;-)

Thanks again!

Yoo hoo, Sancheezy!

Yes! "Aogeba Tōtoshi" is what I heard being sung in TAMPOPO. I listened to a couple of them on YouTube, then went back and found the scene in the movie. Bingo!

It is so beautiful and touching.

Oh balls, I can't believe I forgot to get here earlier to tell people this. So, if you guys haven't already seen it, and it's had 4.5 million views, run over to YT for Dong Saya Dae. It's the ultimate Kpop video. Or is it the West's answer to Gangnam Style? I don't want to say too much but I'm pretty sure Jun Curry Ahn is what happened when Park Bo Gum and G Dragon had a baby.

I haven't been watching dramas lately but now that school is out I'm catching up. Just finished Queen InHyun's Man which was too cute! Another Oh Hae Young looks good and I'm really looking forward to Police Unit 38. It has a "White Collar"/ "Leverage" vibe and I really liked both of those shows. I was looking forward to the 1% of Anything remake since I think with the right screenwriter to update the premise and tighten up the length, it could be really good. Now I just found out that the original writer will be doing the remake, so I'm disappointed as I had a few issues with the original script.

Funemployment continues, so I've started dipping into the deep past for some Kdramas. This week I tackled:

* My Name is Kim Sam Soon. It was ok, but not really my cup of tea. Excellent acting, however.

* City Hall. From a writing perspective, they should have cut this 20 episode drama down to 16, slimming the first 4 episodes into one episode for background/character establishment and slimming down the bucket of tears in episodes 15-19 by one episode. Best KES drama to date, however.

* Sandglass. Just started this one and damn it's intense. Mom just gave her son a ring during the Gwangju Uprising so she could identify his body if he died. Hot Damn. Feels. Made me sit up on the couch and pay attention.

Current Dramas Watching:
* Another Oh Hae Young. Everyone needs therapy. EVERYONE.

* Entertainer. This show has some really awkward moments, especially the shoehorned in romance. Liked the blast from the past Mom coming back into the picture for a moment.

* Lucky Romance. Why is she running around in giant animal costumes and why are there stuffed animals everywhere? LOL at Super Cool Tech Startup Office (TM).

US TV
* Thrones. HOLD THE DOOR. Sansa better not be pregnant.

* Orphan Black. Talk about a downward spiral. Eeesh. As a lawyer, I really want them to stop talking about their patent portfolios, however.

* Outlander. I admit to watching this awfully rapey show solely for the pretty. That said, damn fine acting this week. Intense. Heartrending. Not pretty.

Clearly I need to get a life since I'm watching far too much TV at present. The job fairies may be smiling this month, however.
